Job Description

What its like to work here Situated just 15 miles from London, Reigate is a famed beauty spot in the North Downs. If you like the great outdoors, you will love this stunning location with its breath-taking views, fantastic walks and amazing wildlife.In addition to Reigate Hill, you will also manage Gatton Park and Oxted Downs. These include one of the most important calcareous downlands of the North Downs with very rare butterflies, woodlands thriving with dormice and an ancient parkland with stunningveteran trees. All these sites have high designation statuses and your role will be crucial in managing these rare and fragile habitats. Reigate Hill has one of the best-preserved scheduled monuments of its category which link the site with a bucketful ofstories that will take you back in history.You will be part of the wider Surrey Hills Portfolio working alongside many Ranger teams and Visitor Experience teams to deliver the portfolio targets and ambitions. We strive to be open and inclusive, working with many important stakeholders from farm tenantsto the local council and other conservation organisations such as Butterfly Conservation or the Surrey Dormouse group.Click here for more information on this location What youll be doing As the Area Ranger of Reigate Hill, youll be undertaking a wide variety of practical countryside management tasks.Youll deliver Countryside Stewardship agreements for priority habitats by creating an ambitious habitat management work programme which youllshape and deliver with your volunteer team, contractors and grazier. Youll be leading in infrastructure management by identifying and implementing work plans for all aspects of physical countryside infrastructure and maintaining our extensive rights of waynetworks. Youll build and maintain strong professional relationships with colleagues, contractors, grazier, tenants and neighbouring land managers.Youll be responsible for keeping compliant to NT standards, which includes tree safety management.Therell be plenty of opportunities to develop within the role where possible and you will have the opportunity to work alongside all the different ranger teams that we have in Surrey Hills, with the prospect of increasing your knowledge in other habitatsthat might be new to you. We are happy to fill in training gaps for the right candidate.Please also read the full role profile attached to this advert. Who were looking for To deliver this role successfully, youll need to;

  • Have practical experience of countryside/rural skills
  • Have evidence of good people management and leadership
  • Have excellent communication skills including public presentation
  • Have strong organisational skills including work programming
  • Have a proven track record of managing and leading on health and safety and environmental compliance
  • Have a full UK Driving licence
  • Be able to manage contractors and small projects
And youll need to demonstrate the following experience on your CV/Application;
  • Diploma/NVQ3 or higher in countryside or environmental conservation
  • Have good wildlife identification skills
  • Empathy with, and significant experience of, working with volunteers
