Job Description

Waste & Resources AssistantWhat is the roleAre you passionate about reducing waste and having a positive impact on the environment If so this could be the role for you……Thames Water is the UKs largest water and wastewater services company and is looking to grow its new Waste and Resources Team to help achieve its aim of sending zero waste to landfill. This team sits within the Operational, Logistics and Incident Management area of the business and will give an opportunity to improve environmental, operational and financial efficiency for Thames Water.The role of a Waste and Resources Assistant will be varied with no two days being the same. Your time will be split between office and site and you will be given the opportunity to work on a range of different waste streams including sewage grit, sewage screenings, chemicals, and many more!Key Accountabilities:

  • Identification and implementation of innovative ways, that deliver environmental and financial benefits, to manage key waste streams arising from operational processes;
  • Ensuring Thames Water (and its suppliers) meet their legal requirements with regards to waste;
  • Supporting the Strategic Sourcing Team to ensure the waste structure and circular economy principles are included in Framework Agreements.
  • Supporting the Contract Management Team, ensuring waste management companies provide Thames Water with a compliant service.
  • Providing advice and guidance to operational teams and other internal departments.
  • Planning and undertaking audits and site inspections.
  • Management of Thames Water’s internal freecycle operation “Green Tag” which enables our operational teams to reuse and recycle items across the business
  • Classification of waste in line with Technical Guidance WM3;
  • Creation and implementation of waste management processes and procedures.
  • Collation, study and presentation of waste data.
  • Ensuring Health & Safety requirements are met within Company and legal frameworks.
  • In addition to these duties, you may be required to undertake other duties in line with the needs of the business, where appropriate training provided.
  • What skills are we looking forExperience
  • An understanding and knowledge of waste and recycling management systems
  • In-depth knowledge of waste legislation and policy in the UK
  • Familiar with relevant codes of practice and guidance documents applicable to the waste management industry including Definition of Waste: Code of Practice, Quality Protocols and Waste Duty of Care Code of Practice.
  • Able to undertake waste classification in line with WM3 Guidance
  • Undertaking audits (waste duty of care) and site inspections
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and confidence in the delivery of presentations
  • Collaborative skills with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work on several projects simultaneously whilst working to tight deadlines
  • Data management and analysis
  • Fully competent at using the appropriate Company IT systems and Office software
  • Qualifications
  • Hold a clean driving licence
  • Chartered status with the relevant organisation (e.g. CIWM)
