This particular opportunity has arisen in our Building & Places Business Unit which focusses on projects within the Built Environment.Our Plymouth office has an established track record of successfully delivering projects of varying scale and complexity for both private and public clients. Our modern office environment has excellent transport links, including car parking and comprises a vibrantdiverse mix of sectors and disciplines including Buildings & Places, Environment, Landscape, Infrastructure and Cost Consulting. We are now looking to enhance and grow the structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share ourenthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.The structures team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections and construction support on a wide range of building developments and heavy civil structural projects principally in the defence and commercialsectors. A list of some of the current projects which the Plymouth office is working on includes:

  • Defence projectsnumerous projects of varying scale, including both building structures and heavy civil structural engineering projects, including the upgrade of several dock facilities. Work ranges from inspections, structural assessments to detaileddesign, often working within internal multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Plymstock Fire StationThe redevelopment of an existing fire station site, providing two storey building including office space, appliance bays and new training facilities.
  • Bereavement Centre - New bereavement centre for Plymouth, comprising two ceremony spaces and supporting office accommodation. The development also includes a separate function suite/caf and a further office building, all set within new landscaped grounds.
As a Structural Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:
  • Take responsibility for the preparation of structural calculations.
  • Undertake structural analysis and design using both computer & hand techniques
  • Preparing technical specifications
  • Assist in the management of project delivery in order to provide clients with results on time and budget
  • Undertake structural design of structures using current Eurocode design guides
  • Have a desire to learn new skills and the ability to consider the wider engineering issues related to the work being undertaken
  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.
  • Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.
  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered.
  • Identifies discrepancies in results.
  • Provides guidance to entry level engineers.
  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with moderate supervision.
Minimum Requirements
  • Experienced in use of a commercially available design software packages (e.g. Tekla Building Designer, Tedds, SCIA)
  • Minimum 3 years experience working within a design consultancy environment
  • Ability to communicate well in the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to communicate using hand drawn sketches.
  • Able to decide on the level of reliance and accuracy to attach to results of computer analysis and to interpret results into practical engineering solutions
  • Demonstrable track record in the preparation of designs contributing to the delivery of client projects
  • Able to work on a number of projects simultaneously
  • Ability to obtain MOD security clearance
  • A current driving license and willing to travel to visit sites
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree/Bachelors degree in an appropriate Civil or Structural engineering discipline
  • Working towards Chartered Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or Institution of Structural Engineers
