You can build a real future here. Job DescriptionBabcock is looking for exceptional apprentices to train across various apprenticeships at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth. Our engineering apprenticeship schemes take 4 years to complete. During this time you will earn a competitive apprentice wage and gain hands-on technical experience in the work place. As part of the structured training programme you will complete knowledge and understanding logs whilst being provided with continual support. The next apprenticeship scheme will commence on Monday 6th September 2021. Closing date for applications: 31st March 2021. We are now recruiting for the following Apprenticeship schemes Electrical ApprenticeshipMechanical ApprenticeshipFabricator ApprenticeshipMarine Pipe Fitter ApprenticeshipSupport Engineer ApprenticeshipWelder ApprenticeshipCNC Manufacturing ApprenticeshipElectrical Apprenticeships Electrical fitters will find themselves working in some of our most technically challenging areas. Working on warships and nuclear submarines at our Devonport base, theyll learn a variety of practical skills - from rewiring and connecting circuits, to overhauling, testing and installing equipment. But the development doesnt stop there. We offer full training and support to gain a nationally recognised apprenticeship. As an apprentice electrical fitter you will be taught how to use electrical engineering drawings and specifications to strip, rebuild, test and maintain a wide range of electrical equipment and machinery. As already mentioned, you will be shown how to install, connect and assist in the commission of complex electrical circuits and then apply this knowledge in our workshops and on projects across the Babcock site such as Warships and Nuclear Submarines. You will also help to maintain the vast network of cables and machinery that make up the company infrastructure and are essential to the daily running of the site. You will be shown how to carry out these tasks in a safe and responsible manner. Alongside this training you will study for the Technical Certificate that will make up your Advanced Modern Apprenticeship. Mechanical Apprenticeships Mechanical fitters are literally given all the tools they need to learn some of todays most in-demand engineering skills. Theyre constantly faced with new challenges, working on equipment such as turbines, pumps, torpedo firing systems and complex hydraulic systems. Training how to take a piece of equipment apart is one thing but discovering and repairing any faults before assembling it all back together is another - especially when fitting it onto vessels as diverse as submarines and landing craft. It all goes towards building the foundation of an impressive career. As an apprentice Mechanical Fitter your training will focus on traditional and emerging engineering skills. These skills will be developed to allow you to identify faults and consequently return equipment to working condition. Having been trained to use many types of hand and machine tools a mechanical fitter may even make the replacement part themselves. You will be involved in the installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of a wide range of equipment. The scope of work can be extensive including engines, pumps, valves and hydraulics equipment through to complex weapons systems and even nuclear reactor systems. A mechanical fitter constantly faces new challenges as engineering problems are always arising that need to be overcome. Developments in engineering mean that there is a need to constantly adapt existing skills and knowledge to understand new materials and technology but maintaining traditional skills and knowledge is equally important. We are ready and waiting to train enthusiastic and motivated apprentices. Is that you Fabrication Apprenticeships A Fabricator prepares and produces various metal constructions and components as well as repairing marine structures. Fabricators work from patterns and engineers drawings using a variety of tools and machines to make and assemble metal components. A large part of their work involves repair and renewal of marine structural steel work. You will work in a variety of environments including factory based manufacturing or on board marine vessels undergoing refurbishment. You will work with steel, stainless steel and aluminium, constructing minor and major ship structures such as the hull, shell, deck, bulkheads, seats, frames and girders. Youll be trained in outfitting steel work components, including the installation of doors, auxiliary seating, ladders, hatches and platforms. You will learn to tack weld using different welding processes and will be trained to use thermal cutting equipment, power tools and metal working machinery. You will manufacture a wide range of components required for the upkeep and repair of internal and external areas of naval vessels. These areas will range from all parts of the vessels structure to engine rooms and kitchen/galleys. Marine Pipe Fitter Apprenticeships A Marine Pipe fitter may manufacture a fuel system for a gas turbine, make a new high quality stainless steel pipe for a nuclear reactor and become a brazing expert. You could do all this and more with our support and structured training. A Marine Pipe Fitter apprentice will be involved in the manufacture and installation of low and high pressure pipe systems such as water, air, hydraulics, steam and fuel. Materials used to manufacture the pipes will range from plastic to high quality stainless steel used on submarine reactor systems. The skills learnt will be traditional as well as current for use on the latest fittings and materials. As an apprentice you will learn a range of skills including:

  • Interpret engineering drawings
  • Making of wire and tube templates
  • Manufacture pipes using hand and machine bending techniques
  • Pipe fabrication
  • High quality brazing.
  • The work is varied and involves working on ships and submarines as well as in the workshop and service systems within the doc
