Job Description

About the roleHere at Babcock International were looking to recruit a Design and Safety Process Manager.Due to unprecedented levels of growth, a number of fantastic opportunities for passionate and talented people have arisen at Babcock, the FTSE100 major support services organisation, at its Devonport site in Plymouth. Devonport is the largest naval dockyard in North-Western Europe, and provides essential through-life support the Royal Navys Surface Fleet and Submarine Fleet.These excellent opportunities sit within the Plant Management Group (PMG), which is a friendly welcoming team whose focus is providing a fit for purpose facility to our Navy customers. These vacancies will be filled by an individual with a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) degree, 5 - 6 years of industry experience and a desire to work as part of a team.We work together to ensure that the facilities meet both the customer needs, and the standards of our regulators. The role is based in the Nuclear Licensed Site at Devonport, putting us in the centre of the Submarine Refit Complex and the 9 Dock Facility, where we are involved in controlling both facility upgrades and submarine refits. Those with a STEM (science, technology, Engineering and Maths) background will doubtless find this location exciting; it is highly motivational to have the submarine which you are supporting right outside your window.The role means that we are often out on site using our Science and Engineering knowledge to understand how proposed and on-going work could affect the design intent of plant. It is the teams role to control the safety case which permits these changes to be made to our nuclear site, therefore we value attention to detail and a questioning attitude.Main Purpose of Role:Refitting nuclear submarines requires a Safety Case. This role will manage and implement changes to the safety cases during outage and facility upgrade periods. To do this it is crucial to question the experts in the Design and Technical Authorities to understand the technical detail, but also be confident to speak to and provide guidance for all of the different teams affected by the change. Change to the safety case must be managed; an organised and logical approach is required to ensure all deliverables are achieved by the deadline.Our team prides itself on maintaining a positive working environment, which is friendly, helpful, has a strong team ethos and is adaptive towards the challenges that it faces. We are a multi-disciplinary team with members from all STEM sectors. The Recruiting Manager has a background in Chemistry and Health Physics, the team lead has a Physics background and the current team have varied Engineering backgrounds. Due to this diversity we are able to analyse information and propose solutions to a variety of problems.
