Job Description

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching Trusts with a turnover of c£1 billion, 1.5 million patient contacts a year and more than 12,800 staff based across 5 main sites in South East London. The Trust provides a full range of local hospital services across its different sites, and specialist services from King’s College Hospital (KCH) sites at Denmark Hill in Camberwell and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site in the London Borough of Bromley.We require a new Consultant Ortho-geriatrician to bring changes and drive forward an expanded role for Ortho-Geriatrics within the T&O department. This post is currently funded for two years, however, the expectation is that it would be made substantive and the department expanded in the future.If you are a newly qualified Consultant or geriatric physician looking to a new challenge or if you are looking to have a better family friendly working hours, this post would suit you.We are a dynamic T&O department who is looking to expand to trauma care for elderly patients and develop new ways of coordinated care for these patients. You would be expected to develop new care pathways for coordinated care for these patients, working with Orthopaedic surgeons, Neurosurgeons and other physicians in addition to working collaboratively with patients, therapists and nurses to speed up and ease their hospital journey.The Princess Royal University Hospital, part of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the major receiving hospital for 400 hip fracture patients a year in south-east London. In addition we expect to care for approximately 60-80 peri-prosthetic fractures and spinal fracture (elderly- non-operative) patients. With the recent appointment of three T&O surgeons with a particular interest in fragility L/L fractures, this department expects the team to produce QIP’s and procedures to make PRUH a beacon for Ortho-geriatric care. It is expected that the NHFD Best Practice Tariff would be taken up from the current 70% to the top decile of national performance.You would work alongside the current Ortho-geriatrician and the established multi-professional team in the trauma unit at PRUH, with an aim to provide 7-days a week pre-op and post-op medical input for the care of elderly patients admitted to the Trauma unit. Weekend work will consist of half day of pre op and ward round without on call commitment for this post.You along with your team would be expected to expand the current service to include the care of all elderly in-patients admitted to the Trauma unit at PRUH: these would include hip fractures, femoral fractures, peri-prosthetic fractures, (non-operative) spinal fractures and others that are admitted to the Trauma unit for non-operative conditions.You are also expected to contribute to running out-patient and Community care in the form of Falls prevention, prevention of Fragility & Osteoporosis and other related matters.You would be expected to enhance greater community based care for these elderly patients and minimise hospital stay by working with and developing appropriate services in conjunction with therapists, nurses and social workers.We are looking for applicants with a wide experience in geriatric medicine and elderly care who also have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional skills to lead service developments in the Trust.For further details / informal visits contact:Name Osman KhanTo visit the department and meet the team, please feel free to contact:Mr. Mani, Ganapathyraman Dr. Thiru Rajeevan (Lead for Ortho-geriatrics)Ms. Julie Brooker, CNS for Hip FracturesMr. Chris Dinsdale, General Manager for T&OMr Osman Khan (Clinical Lead T&O PRUH)
