Job Description

Trust :- Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust | Location/Hospital :- The Royal Oldham (OL1 2JH) | Ward/Department :- Biochemistry/Pathology | Hours per week :- 37.5 (Full time) |Working Pattern :- Mon-Fri 08:00-16:30 | Shift Pattern :- Mon-Fri | Assignment/Band :- BMSW00Job Title: Biomedical Support Worker | Band: Band 2 During Training Period, Band 3 following satisfactory completion of training |Reports to: Biochemistry Technical Managers | Responsible to: Biochemistry Service ManagerBase/Department:Your normal place of work is the Pathology Department at The Royal Oldham Hospital or such other location within The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust or its associated sites where you may reasonably be required to work for the proper performance and exercise of your duties.Main Tasks & Overview of ResponsibilitiesWhen required the post holder will, under indirect supervision, be expected to:-

  • Specimen reception, registration and preparation
  • Receive, sort, identify and assign a laboratory number to pathology specimens delivered to the department by hospital staff, patients and members of the public.
  • Patients/members of the public with communication difficulties and barriers to understanding (e.g. elderly patients or where English is not the first language) must be dealt with sensitively.
  • Accurately register patient details, test requirements and information relevant to the specimen on the laboratory computer.
  • Deal with problem samples according to protocol.
  • Participate in Departmental and Trust Clinical Audit.
  • Technical duties
  • Perform basic tests and record results on the laboratory computer according to protocol.
  • Use and operate laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, automated equipment, pipettes, balances and pH meters) according to protocol.
  • Dismantle, clean, disinfect and reassemble laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuge rotors).
  • Prepare samples for analysis (e.g. centrifuge, separate and aliquot serum/plasma, prepare unstable samples for dispatch, measure 24 hour urine volumes).
  • Prepare and package all samples for despatch to reference laboratories according to protocol and current postal regulations.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents (e.g. saline, pH buffers, 24h urine containers).
  • File and retrieve materials in manual storage systems (e.g. forms, specimens).
  • Carry out complex procedures e.g. lengthy manual preparation of reagents/chemicals and samples prior to analysis according to protocols.
  • Carry out maintenance and running quality control samples on blood gas analysers.
  • Maintenance of automated laboratory equipment, performing calibration sequence, quality control and samples according to protocol, reporting any errant data to senior staff.
  • Inputting of results from Reference Laboratories onto the Laboratory Information System, which are then checked by qualifies staff.
  • Responsibilities
  • Be aware of, be familiar with and adhere to documented departmental standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and other protocols that ensure compliance with CPA/UKAS Accreditation standards.
  • Refer problems to a senior member of staff to ensure that erroneous results are not reported.
  • Co-operate fully with senior members of Biomedical Scientists (BMS) and other staff, to ensure the quality of the service is maintained.
  • Ensure that the Departmental Safety Policy is complied with and that safe working practices are adhered to.
  • Pursue own professional development in accordance with an agreed personal development plan.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions i.e. Fire, Moving and Handling, etc.
  • Plan and prioritise own work.
