Job Description

Are you looking to support your local George Eliot NHS HospitalWould you like to be part of a team delivering essential services to the hospital If so, we would love to hear from you. We are looking for Porters to join our team immediately. This will be a 12-month, Band 2 interim role at the George Eliot Hospital. Pay Rate: Hospital Porter, Band 2, Rate from £9.89 per hour - £18.10 per hour (excluding holiday pay)Working Hours: On a Rota Basis - Average of 20 hours per week: 6am to 2pm, 2 pm to 10pm 10 pm to 6am 9 to 5 pm 8 to 4pm.There is onsite parking at the Trust with discounted Staff Parking.About the role The main duty of the post holder is to take calls for assistance from wards and departments, provide a portering service to all wards and departments, to carry out routine ad-hoc duties, dealing with all enquiries and deliveries, booking transport for wards and departments, monitoring the trusts car parking and dealing with enquiries and complaints, liaising with the Porter Team Leaders on day to day mattersMain duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide a portering service to all wards & departments. To escort and convey patients by wheelchair, bed or trolley
  • To distribute food trolleys and boxes - and food items
  • To transfer various specimens or bloods to the pathology department and other wards and departments
  • To collect prescriptions and drug books from wards and departments and deliver them to the Pharmacy department
  • To distribute and change medical gas cylinders as requested
  • To attend fire calls
  • To assist at cardiac arrests
  • To transport records, X-rays, furniture, equipment and materials
  • To undertake mortuary duties as required - viewings, BIDs
  • To report any suspicious incidents and assist where necessary
  • When required, assist with low level security requests
  • When required, assist with car parking duties
  • To cover staff in the post room - sorting incoming and outgoing Mail - distribute to all wards and departments
  • To collect general clinical, waste - cytotoxic refuse and sharp boxes from all areas on site if required
  • Other important Role Responsibility
  • Attends mandatory training courses
  • Ensure that when a deceased patient is transported from the ward they are treated with due dignity and respect.
  • Operate a communication device to keep in touch with other staff in the department.
  • Booking taxis when needed & keeping clear records of requests for taxis especially the full name of the person who has authorised it.
  • Attendance at all sessions is mandatory, these include moving & handling, resuscitation, infection control, clinical governance, fire training and Dealing with Conflict training.
  • Training in safe handling of medical gases
  • Training in safe handling of all medical gases/ safe handling of liquid nitrogen
  • Qualifications and Essential Skills No formal qualifications are required to become a hospital porter. You will need to have a good command of the English language both written and spoken.
