Job Description

Medicines Management Technician Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is currently looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Medicines Management Technicians (MMTs) to join our large, friendly, progressive and dynamic pharmacy team.This is an excellent opportunity for qualified Pharmacy Technicians to join a team of Senior Medicines Management Technicians and become valued members of the pharmacy and wider multidisciplinary teams. Within the role you will be able to develop your clinical knowledge and skills in different specialities of medicine, whilst working closely with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to deliver a high quality medicines management service.Specialist roles are available in the following areas:

  • Acute Medicine
  • The Medical Admissions Unit at the Queens Medical Centre campus is undergoing a large transformation. The new expanded unit will open imminently and become one of the largest acute medicine admissions units in the country with 92 beds.The pharmacy team are highly valued within the acute medicine directorate and consists of pharmacists, MMTs and assistants. Due to the recent expansion there is a need for further MMTs to join the team in order for us to continue to deliver an excellent pharmacy service.
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • The Geriatric Medicine wards have undergone recent restructuring and include a 42 bed admissions unit and 10 ward areas across Queens Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital. The pharmacy team comprises pharmacists and MMTs who provide clinical services predominately within admissions but also help and support other geriatric medicine wards across the Trust.The team are looking to expand with the addition of a MMT to help deliver core and specialist pharmacy services to this patient group. The pharmacy team are well integrated within the health care of older people medicine division and work closely with the multidisciplinary team to improve patient experience and outcomes.
  • Respiratory
  • The respiratory department is based at Nottingham City Hospital and covers a busy admissions unit alongside more specialist areas such as the cystic fibrosis unit and a level one acute care unit. The department is planned to move into a purpose built unit in the near future to ensure a working environment and facilities are at the forefront of clinical care.The respiratory pharmacy team are looking for a MMT to join their team to provide services to the specialities and ward services, to enhance flow, but to also increase the pharmacy input into specialist care. There are opportunities to work with the asthma team, interstitial lung disease team and to gain experience on the cystic fibrosis unit, with potential to develop working relationships with other teams in the future.
  • Stroke
  • Acute Stroke Services have recently undergone reconfiguration and relocated to the Queens Medical Centre campus. The alignment of services aims to improve patient outcomes in line with national standards and looks to provide world class stroke care alongside our existing Neuroscience centre.This MMT specialist role is a new and exciting opportunity. You will be part of a large multidisciplinary team delivering a medicines management service to patients transferred to the acute stroke units. There will also be opportunities to improve and develop the pharmacy service delivered to acute stroke which will allow for both progression and continued professional development.We will be interviewing for all of the specialist areas at the same time. Please feel free to express any preference in your personal statement and there will be the opportunity to discuss the available roles at interview.Responsibilities:Your role will have a focus on getting medicines ‘right first time’ and facilitating a smooth transfer of medication related issues across the interface at admission, discharge and transfer.Additional key responsibilities will include:
  • Managing medications at ward level including checking and assessing patient’s own medication on admission and at discharge
  • Collating medicine information for accurate medicine reconciliation on admission
  • Patient counselling
  • Providing near patient medicines management services to wards including ward-based dispensing, accuracy checking and self-checking of pre-labelled medication
  • Liaising with senior clinical pharmacists, multidisciplinary team members and primary care colleagues
  • Ward controlled drug checks and returns
  • Each of the specialist areas will have additional specific responsibilities – please get in touch to discuss further if required.The role will also have a focus on stock management, cost savings, involvement in ward and department projects, clinical audits/data collection, staff management and further developing the medicines management service to the clinical areas.We welcome applications from individuals with excellent communication and listening skills who are able to use their initiative and manage their own time and meet deadlines.
