Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for Senior Chemist to join our team!Job Title: Senior ChemistLocation: Nottingham, United Kingdom.Remuneration: £45,000 - £80,000 (based on experience) + Benefits (please see below)

  • Up to 60% basic salary + balance company share
Start date and end date (approx): This is a permanent position and is available from July 2022Hours: Full time working hoursa mix of remote, lab and office workingAbout us:Our company is a R&D start-up that has secured its first round of private investment and won multiple public grant awards for its ground-breaking technology for carbon sequestration within concrete.Our company has been a wide range of awards including the United Nations most innovative Net-Zero technology Climate Challenge Cup at COP26 in Glasgow, Royal Academy of Engineering and SGD UN. Our company is looking for a talented and motivated materialchemist and/or adsorption and surface Chemistry specialist.This is the Chief Scientific Officer position with significant progress opportunities in a fast-growing team. You will be working directly with directors in order to deliver the our company milestones and directly contribute to the R&D technology. Pleaseconsider as a small start-up, we cannot provide visa for employees.Please see the person specification and roles & responsibilities below: Essential:
  • Min 5 years experience leading independent research, ability to design and conduct research addressing fundamental scientific questions
  • Understanding of laboratory setup, with experience in equipment specification development and procurement
  • Knowledge of synthesis, formulation and characterisation of organic and inorganic materials including polymers, and solid adsorbents (IR, UV, Particle histogram via SEM and TEM)
  • R&D experience in the fields of adsorption, adsorbent design, separation technologies, catalyst, materials characterisation and/or carbon capture
  • Experience in solid gas adsorption and adsorbent design, sorbent development for gas stripping and capture (CO2 or H2S), Surface area analysis via gas adsorption (BET), physical and chemical adsorption or thermal analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of catalyst/ materials characterization and/or testing techniques
  • Experience in developing proposals/bids writing
Desirable:
  • Developed R&D schedules for start-ups and/or experience setting up laboratories for large organisations
  • Experience in computational chemistry, analysis and simulation of synthetic materials
  • 10+ years post PhD experience in material chemistry
  • Experience in carbon capture utilisation and storage
  • ICP-OES elemental analysis, surface energy measurement and other techniques.
  • Experience in patent writing and grant proposal development
Qualifications:
  • A MSc or PhD in chemistry or related field.
  • 3 or more years of relevant hands-on lab/pilot experience in applied research, or in an industrial setting.
Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Develop new technology areas that leverage existing capabilities and expertise, including but not limited to CO2 adsorption and concrete production.
  • Develop the companys IPs for CO2 adsorption technologies.
  • Conduct literature review and generate ideas to optimise the companys carbon capture and utilisation technologies.
  • Develop the companys laboratory operations and arrange and categorise experiments. Plan and conduct R&D research to deliver milestones.
  • Actively participate in brainstorming and problem-solving in a team setting to identify solutions.
  • Develop the funded grant project proposalse.g. Innovate UK, European Innovation Council, UKRI, Horizon Europe. Own and develop the pipeline of multi-million pound/euro grant funding opportunities relevant to the companys profile
  • Deliverables
  • Develop and lead the companys chemistry R&D for the sequestration of CO2 in concrete.
  • Develop and successfully deliver adsorbent technologies for optimal sorption and desorption in concrete.
  • Plan, procure and manage the chemical laboratory in line with regulations.
  • Lead the chemical aspects of grant applications with a £10 million target.
  • Prepare quarterly reports analysing technologies in line with and/or beneficial to the company.
  • Produce new ideas and innovations for sequestration of CO2 in concrete.
  • Prepare the documentation for IP and patents.
