Job Description

Your New roleWe currently have an exciting opportunity for a Construction Manager to join our Midlands team, based in either Kettering, Nottingham or Birmingham. Leading a team of Construction Assurance Managers and Site Supervisors, you will be responsible for managingtheir development and performance as well as that of our supply chain of over 25 contractors, including appointed Principal Contractors, focussed on the delivery of the regions Capital Investment Schemes. You will oversee the allocation and utilisation ofresources to assure the safe, customer focussed and efficient delivery of highways and structures maintenance and improvement works whilst challenging construction programmes and supporting the mitigation of construction and delivery risks.This role will require some unsociable hours and travel across the Midlands Region and can be based from our Kettering (A14 J9 Pytchley Depot), Nottinghamshire (Stirling House) or Birmingham (The Cube) offices.You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employmentWhat youll be leading on

  • Ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers, employees and all parties involved in projects are fully considered and accounted for throughout the construction process.
  • Provide leadership, direction and line management for the Regions in-house Construction team, ensuring timely setting of objectives, performance management reviews and development of appropriate succession and development plans
  • Manage the availability, utilisation and allocation of team resources, including recruitment, to ensure appropriate resourcing levels for all the activities in scope.4
  • Set personal example in Health, Safety and Environmental matters by ensuring compliance with Highways England policies and procedures and Quality Management System (QMS) at all times
  • Ensure Project Managers and Commercial & Procurement colleagues receive regular and timely feedback on scheme construction progress, risks, early warnings and issues, and act as the initial point of escalation for any on-site issues that need to be resolved.
  • Proactively identify and implement continuous improvements which eliminate, reduce or provide greater control for risks arising during the construction phase of a project.
  • Provide subject matter input and inform solution design and work packaging to reduce / eliminate risks to health and safety and improve buildability during construction.
  • Ensuring all works are constructed in line with CDM Regulations, Health, Safety and Environmental Legislation and appropriate specification and technical standards.
To be Successful
  • Educated to degree level in relevant engineering discipline (desirable; civil engineering degree preferred) OR extensive highway maintenance / construction experience
  • Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
  • Strong commercial acumen, with in-depth understanding of the relevant supply chain contracts; good financial acumen, including budget management
  • Relevant legislation, practices and policies for health, safety and wellbeing in Construction
