Faculty of ScienceSchool of Environmental SciencesSenior Research Associate Ref: RA1808£33,797 to £40,322 per annumUEA has some of the most innovative and highly regarded centres for research in the UK. Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate to undertake research in collaboration with Prof. Alex Baker in order to study "Atmospheric fluxes of mineral dust-derived soluble trace elements to the ocean using thorium isotopes (ThorMap)". This is a 30-month appointment which is funded through a research grant from the NERC.The successful applicant will perform trace metal analysis, including the use of strong acid digestion procedures, on archived and newly collected aerosol samples, using a range of analytical techniques. Laboratory studies on parent soils will be performed under clean-room conditions and using imaging microscopy. The successful applicant will take the lead in analysing and interpreting their results and in the preparation of publications arising from the work. They will collaborate with partners at Oxford to ensure the successful delivery of project goals.The research will be based at the University of East Anglia in the School of Environmental Sciences.You will hold a PhD in Environmental, Marine, Analytical or Atmospheric Chemistry (or equivalent qualification or experience), along with significant previous experience of independent research and significant research laboratory experience and a strong background in marine biogeochemistry or air-sea chemical exchange. You should also have excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience of presenting and writing-up research results for publication in conferences and/or peer-viewed journals; and be able to meet all the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.It is expected that the successful applicant will collect samples during a research cruise in the Atlantic Ocean of ~6 weeks duration.The full time post is available from 1 April 2021 and is for a fixed term period of 30 months.Closing date: 18 January 2021.To apply, please visit our website via the button below.The University is a Bronze Athena Swan Award holder, currently working towards Silver.
