Job Description

Becoming aSystems support developer with FeraThe purpose of the job is to work within a team of software development engineers, taking the lead on providing day-to-day support for existing systems which are used across all areas of Fera business services and science teams, as well as by Feras customers. This will entail liaising with colleagues (including service desk staff, developers, managers, and system users) to provide effective support and issue resolution; monitoring scheduled tasks and activities; reporting on volume and type of support tickets; undertaking minor enhancements on existing systems.This role provides the opportunity to become familiar with a number of technologies; The majority of the systems supported by the team are based on MySQL or MS SQLServer databases. Older applications are ColdFusion, whilst more recent applications are Laravel/php, and Angular. The team also support Nautilus LIMS for science teams, and a small number of applications developed in with CMS frameworks (e.g., Drupal, Silverstripe).What youll be doing:

  • Monitor the development support queue, prioritising tickets and be responsible for addressing priority support tasks in a timely manner.
  • Monitor scheduled tasks and processes, raising tickets for any issues/failures, and be responsible for addressing any errors reported in a timely manner.
  • Monitor webmaster inbox and be responsible for raising tickets and addressing any errors reported.
  • Notify managers of any ongoing issues as they become evident and escalate any ticket which cannot be resolved within required timeframe.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure issue resolution, undertaking any work agreed wherever possible.
  • On a daily basis, provide a summary of support work in order to ensure effective work prioritisation across the team.
  • Carry out all development within a version controlled environment to defined coding standards.
  • To ensure own knowledge and expertise are kept up-to-date.
  • Sometimes work with development delivery teams to provide additional resource for development of system enhancements
  • What were looking for:
  • Inquisitiveness and adaptability
  • An understanding of object-oriented programming.
  • Ability to write clear, concise and well-documented code
  • Understanding of CSS, HTML, and one or more of php, ColdFusion, JavaScript, JQuery
  • Knowledge of any modern relational database, preferably MySQL, or MS SQL Server
  • Understanding of development frameworks
  • Proven ability to develop web-applications using HTML, CSS, Javascript and one or more of php, ColdFusion, or front-end framework such as Bootstrap, jquery, Angular
