Job Description

We support discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, and were taking on three worldwide health challenges: mentalhealth, global heating and infectious diseases.We are looking for a Senior Research Manager to contribute to the leadership, development and delivery of the Infectious Diseases health challenge ensuring strategic objectives are met. The Senior Research Managerwill support the Epidemics and Epidemiology team to convene, fund and share learning leading on the implementation and assessment of funding calls and commissions, convening groups, drafting reports and liaising with internal and external groups and individualsas required.This role will lead on scoping areas of interest, shaping and advancing internal research and development projects as well as responsibility for a number of large projects. The responsibilities of this role are:To contribute to the effective deliveryof funding decisions, providing critical scientific assessment of applications, participating in decision-making reviews and making clear recommendations to senior management. To ensure a breadth and depth of knowledge of your area and the wider research andfunding landscape and apply this to the review and development of the Infectious Diseases Research Programme activities, identifying suitable routes for the development and delivery of new activities and sharing knowledge and expertise to contribute to thework Research Programmes and throughout Wellcome. To ensure decision making and review processes are robust, fair and in line with Wellcomes strategy, and ensure the highest quality of external advice is identified to support decision-making. Identify andmanage larger projects, acting as the main point of contact, liaising with external stakeholders or partners for the ongoing management and conclusion of major initiatives. Devise and implement strategic workplans to deliver the agreed outcomes for a strategicarea of work (or multifaceted programmes of work) relevant to Infectious Diseases.Matrix management of larger projects within Infectious Diseases and with other line functions to deliver on projects and achieve the outcomes of their strategic area. Independentlymanage workload to meet deadlines and deliver timely, high quality self-contained outputs and provide regular high-level updates to senior management, seeking advice and feedback as appropriate. Use deep understanding of the Infectious Diseases stakeholdersto identify establish and maintain key relationships, understanding their needs and working in partnership. Effectively use knowledge and expertise to inform and influence internal and external networks to seek advice and input from experts as needed. To ensureWellcome has a good understanding of the nature of our funding portfolio (covering research progress, research culture (locally and at host) and D&I , an active relationship with applicants and staff on grants so that all funded researchers feel a greatersense of partnership with Wellcome. To organise and lead multidisciplinary internal and external meetings and project teams, to deliver on strategic activities. To clearly communicate the work and funding of the Infectious Diseases area internal and externalaudiences. Regularly report to senior leadership on progress and delivery towards outcomes. Use knowledge and expertise to be a respected and authoritative voice outside Wellcome. Be the owner of the risk and control environment for your area and be accountablefor the quality of you and your teams outputs. Contribute to the creation and development of a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments. To be successful in this role you will have:The ability to demonstratea breadth of research expertise in a relevant field through relevant work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting. Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communitiesSignificant experience in working in relevant field Ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to a range of different backgrounds and different seniority levels. Excellent organisational skills. Demonstrated abilityto manage a fluctuating, heavy, workload and competing priorities Articulate with strong verbal communication skills. Adept at delivering presentations Evidence of excellent writing skills with ability to synthesise information conveying key points clearlyand concisely IT literate with experience of using database and other computerised systems, including Microsoft Office products Experience of shaping and delivering research or science related programmes of work Experience/knowledge of managing large projectsin an academic or industry setting.
