Job Description

Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Aurora Eccles School, NorfolkLocation:Quidenham, NorwichSalary:(£11.50-£12.60) depending upon experience and qualificationsHours:Term Time only- 40hrs per week- 8.30am-4.30pmAurora Eccles SchoolAurora Eccles School provides flexible day placements for students aged 7 to 19 years with communication and associated difficulties or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Some may be on the autistic spectrum or have anxieties and difficulties that create barriers to learning.Main Purpose of the Role:The purpose of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant is to support the Class Teacher with all elements of the day to day running of the class and to teach whole classes, groups and individual lessons in consultation with the Class Teacher on a regular basis across a range of classes.Key Duties:Pupil Welfare and Safeguarding

  • Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils according to the school’s policies, including safeguarding and PREVENT.
  • Provide meaningful feedback on pupil behaviour, relationships and attitudes.
  • Monitor pupils conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult or very challenging issues and keep records of incidents, health and behaviour etc. as necessary.
  • Ensure a high standard of personal care for the pupils, carefully monitoring the health and well-being of the pupils informing the care staff, medical staff and any other relevant professionals of any concerns.
  • Promote and encourage independence and personal development in pupils and maintain high expectations of behaviour at all times.
  • Promote pupils’ cognitive, social, emotional, behavioural, physical development and spiritual well-being through a whole Waking Day curriculum.
  • Work with pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/ care professional.
  • Work co-operatively with colleagues, parents/ carers and professionals involved following a multi-disciplinary approach and supporting the pupils’ Waking Day Curriculum.
  • Attend to pupils’ personal care needs when required including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating as well as help with social, welfare and health matters.
  • Supporting Teaching and Learning
  • To lead in the absence of any Class Teachers across the school.
  • Assist the Class Teacher’s with carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as outline in the Professional Standards for Teachers.
  • Know and understand the Class Teacher’s curriculum planning and to plan, prepare and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individual, small groups and/or classes modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.
  • To provide high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and experiences through teaching a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
  • Support the day to day running of classes across the school and take the lead in the absence of a Class teacher.
  • Select and adapt appropriate resources/methods to facilitate agreed learning activities
  • Reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Take an active role in key areas of responsibility across the school including displays and organising resource.
  • Develop and implement individual plans for pupils (such as the educational elements in an EHCP), including attendance at, and contribution to, reviews if requested.
  • Support the role of parents/carers in pupils’ learning and contribute to meetings with parents/carers to provide constructive feedback on pupil progress/achievement etc
  • Pupils Attainment and Progress
  • Assess, record and report on development, progress and attainment
  • Assess the needs of pupils and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support pupils’ learning
  • Work co-operatively with other staff and professionals involved with pupils in the class following a multi-disciplinary approach and supporting the pupils’ Waking Day Curriculum.
  • Monitoring and Recording
  • Participate in the planning and evaluation of learning activities.
  • Provide meaningful feedback on pupil attainment and progress.
  • Monitor and record pupil responses and learning achievement, drawing any issues which cannot be resolved to the attention of the teacher.
  • Ensure that all documentation is completed correctly for records of incidents, health, behaviour, etc as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure that relevant information regarding students is effectively communicated to support their development and wellbeing at all times.
  • Career Path Development and School Development
  • Be a role model for new staff and supervise and guide less experienced TAs.
  • Further professional development by engaging in reflective practices and continuous professional development and appraisal, including attending all statutory training provided by the school.
  • Contribute to the community life of the school by taking an active part in the preparation and celebration of both community and multi-cultural events.
  • Respond to the varying and changing needs of the school and undertake duties and tasks to the highest ability in order to achieve the smooth running of the school.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Qualifications
  • The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification, or demonstrate equivalent skill level.
  • GCSE pass above C (or 4 in the new GCSE system) in English and Maths
  • Knowledge and Experience:
  • Relevant knowledge and experience of pupils with SEN, SLD/PMLD, ADHD and ASD
  • Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures
  • Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including managing behaviours that challenge.
  • Experience working within education is advantageous
  • Experience of working within a multi-cultural, inclusive setting
