Job Description

Position: Science Laboratory TechnicianLocation: CardiffSalary:£14,000-£15,000Type of position: Permanent, Full time, term time only. (36 weeks per year)Reed Education are delighted to be recruiting for a Science Laboratory Technician to join a leading co-educational school based in East side of Cardiff to start in September on a permanent basis.Job purpose:To provide practical and technical support for Science teaching, ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and is ready to use, and that the right materials/apparatus are available and prepared for practical lessons and demonstrations.Duties will include:• Timely and prompt preparation of all requisite apparatus, instruments and solutions in advance of all science practical lessons, in particular those needed for GCSE and A level external examinations; and efficient clearing and cleaning following each experiment.• To maintain apparatus and equipment, including construction and/or modification, and operate and maintain stock control of all goods to include perishables and chemicals.• In conjunction with senior colleagues, to keep legal records (alcohols, poisons, etc.) ensuring the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment within the science preparation rooms and laboratories.• To report all Health and Safety issues to the Head of Chemistry.• To organise the safe disposal, according to appropriate guidelines, of any items/substances used in the laboratories.• To undertake regular health and safety or other training to remain up to date with applicable guidelines and rulings.• Constructing and/or modifying simple apparatus using basic workshop skills.• Provide reasonable departmental clerical/administrative support e.g. typing, word processing, photocopying, printing etc.• Arranging for the safe disposal of waste laboratory materials including chemical and biological waste.• Maintain a resource bank of safety information and risk assessments.• To work with teachers to facilitate education delivery in laboratories, as required.• To prepare visual aids for teaching staff and help out at open evenings.• To occasionally invigilate for examinations, if required.• Where appropriately qualified, to keep up to date with First Aid training and to assist with the treatment of sick/ injured people, maintaining accurate records, in conjunction with the School’s Lead First Aider.• Support the aims and ethos of the school – including supporting the morale and efficacy of staff and pupils; promoting the catholic values at the core of the school; acting in an ethical manner in thought, word and deed; at all times promoting the good nameand reputation of the school when in and outside the school.• Participate in staff training.
