Retail Manager - Newport WetlandsReference: DEC20214430Location: Newport WetlandsSalary: £22,986 - £25,500 per annumBenefits: Pension, Life Assurance, 26 days Annual LeaveWould you like to use your retail manager skills and work on a stunning nature reserve full of amazing wildlife Then we have a fantastic opportunity for you to join our team here at Newport Wetlands situated on the Gwent Levels and Severn estuary. As partof the team, you will work for one of the worlds leading conservation charities, dedicated to saving nature. You will be directly contributing to the charitys objectives through income you help to generate in the shop.The visitor centre at Newport Wetlands is run by the RSPB and we are looking to recruit a Retail Manager. Newport Wetlands is in the top four visited sites for the RSPB with lots of potential to further grow the retail business. We are looking for an enthusiasticand motivated individual with great leadership skills and a strong retail and customer service background to manage the shop and the retail team and to work with the other departments to maximise the potential for the site.You will draw on your retail experience to deliver all retail elements, delivering an excellent customer experience for visitors to the shop, with the aim of maximising income and profit for the RSPB.As Retail Manager you will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Assist with the delivery of the brand and converting visits into support, to contribute to the RSPBs Saving Nature Strategy.
  • Lead by example when serving customers and dealing with enquiries, maintaining a friendly, professional manner and ensuring the retail store is delivering the highest standard of customer care.
  • Monitor financial success against targets and KPIs.
  • Ensure that the shop is commercially merchandised to an agreed layout to maximise sales.
  • Be accountable for the stock control and ensure appropriate stock levels are met, including managing stock deliveries and carrying out stock takes.
  • Ensure that all retail staff and volunteers are recruited, trained and managed in accordance with RSPB guidelines and policy that results in efficient team working.
  • Work with the wider team at Newport Wetlands to maximise opportunities for increased sales as well as supporting the other departments in the team.
You will receive full training and support on all aspects of RSPB Retail, which will enable you to drive sales, be a positive role model to the team, and an ambassador for the RSPB.About Newport Wetlands:
  • The RSPB manage the visitor facilities at the Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve whilst the reserve itself is owned and managed by Natural Resources Wales. The reserve has wonderful trails that take in some stunning scenery and wildlife.
  • The facilities include a car park and the visitor centre where there is a shop, caf, education facilities and a meeting room. There are 20 staff and approximately 50 volunteers making up the team. The current shop staffing model comprises a Retail Manager,two Retail Assistants plus a number of retail volunteers.
  • The shop stocks a range of full price products, comprising of bird food and bird care products, binoculars and telescopes and giftware.
  • Regular weekend and bank holiday working will be required.
What we need from youEssential skills, knowledge and experience:
  • Sound understanding of systems and procedures necessary to run a commercial retail operation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workloads.
  • A natural leader who can influence, motivate and inspire people at all levels.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to work on own initiative.
  • Proven track record of managing a successful retail store.
  • Experience of managing and delivering targets and KPIs for a retail business.
  • Experience of analysing and interpreting financial data in a retail environment.
  • Experience of working with stock management systems and stock controls.
  • Successful experience of leading and managing a diverse team.
  • Delivering an exemplar customer service experience with ability to manage and respond to customer needs and feedback.
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:
  • Working knowledge of visual merchandising principles.
  • Experience of working at a visitor attraction.
  • Retail management certificate.
