Cordant People has an opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to work covering holidays and sickness for our prestigious Client. The role is based in Newport and will consist of both days and nights. The hourly rate for this role is between £11.80- £14.16 and will involve weekend work.Job Specification:Testing of bitumen samples taken from the Barges (permanently moored in Newport Docks). Work involves heating, handling and testing hot bitumen samples (180C).Samples will be taken by the Crew and left for the Lab Tech to re-heat and test. Basic Bitumen tests involves physical property testing: hardness, softening point etc. NO chemistry. Intricate testing, small components needing good eyesight for close up work.Majority of work will be unaccompanied/unsupervised, except crew members/site supervisor. On a daily basis the Lab Tech / Crew / Tech Manager communicate with each other to determine start time for that day.Lab tech goes into site for the agreed time to test the samples that have been drawn by the crew (Place in oven, warm up to 130-180C). Catch up with emails while samples warming up. Then pour out samples and test. Record results on paper and then transferinto a spreadsheet on DropBox and then email to management the results on a daily basis. Out of specs may involve an immediate call to management in the middle of the night.Other tasks include:Samples sent by Courier from other Puma sites such as Glasgow & Dagenham, tested as above. Sample storage and management.Internal calibrations/temperature checks etc.Cleaning equipment and the portable lab building. Some use of safe solvents. Liaison with crew (mainly Russians) in simple English.Important position for QC management within the business.Person requirements:For Health & Safety reasons, person needs to be 18 years of age at least. Lone working at unsociable hours.Basic education: Maths, English and Science at GCSE level.Basic IT knowledge; working knowhow of Word, Excel & Outlook.No experience in bitumen needed as training will be provided.Well organised as testing relies on precise conditioning times.Careful and have good health and safety awareness: handle hot bitumen safely, working on a busydock in the dark.MUST be Reliable and a self-starter - works autonomously for much of the time. But with support from Management & Crew.Can plan their own time.Care/accuracy needed for intricate testing.Can communicate effectively over the phone, by email and in person.Flexible approach to the work.This would be a fantastic opportunity for a graduate who is availablethroughout the summer and looking to boost their income.You will be paid weekly.If you believe this is the role for you then please apply ASAP as we will be looking to start you for training immediately.
