Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Behaviour Welfare Adviser to join the team at Newport Animal Centre. The RSPCA is dedicated to finding unwanted, mistreated and abused animals loving permanent homes.As a Behaviour and Welfare Adviser you will be responsible for assessing and monitoring case and signed-over dogs in the RSPCA?s care. This will include devising behavioural plans, carrying out or overseeing environmental and behavioural modification to maintain high standards of welfare, supporting successful rehoming and reducing return rates.What you?ll be doing:

  • Assess behaviour and welfare of dogs at intake into the RSPCA establishment and throughout their stay by use of agreed criteria. Complete detailed and accurate records of each animal
  • Produce, or supervise production of, a behaviour and welfare plan for every dog in the animal centre
  • Implement, or supervise other staff implementing, the plans and ensure ongoing observation and assessment of progress for each animal
  • Provide proactive and reactive advice and support on welfare, behaviour and training to RSPCA staff (including Inspectorate), volunteers, potential fosterers, adopters and owners of RSPCA animals
  • Cooperate with the Regional Clinical Animal Behaviourist and the Head of Clinical Behaviour in the management of difficult cases
  • Provide pre-adoption meetings and post-adoption telephone or face to face support as required for adopters, to maximise successful rehoming and minimise return rates.
  • Assess behaviour and welfare of RSPCA dogs held at private boarding establishments (PBEs), prioritising those with the greatest welfare and behavioural needs for transfer to RSPCA animal centres
  • Plan and deliver agreed training on animal behaviour and welfare matters to RSPCA staff and volunteers, enabling them to implement interventions
  • Where required supporting educational programmes as part of the RSPCA?s Generation Kind project
  • Maintain an up-to-date and evidence-based knowledge in the behavioural rehabilitation and welfare of companion animals
  • You?ll have:
  • Formal qualification in dog welfare, behaviour and training carrying at least 120 credit points at level 4
  • Experience of the care, husbandry and handling of dogs gained whilst working in the animal care/welfare industry (desirable)
  • Practical experience of the application of theoretical behaviour modification and training principles
  • Experience of working and communicating with the general public
  • IT skills
  • Proven ability to lead/supervise a team
  • Experience of leading training sessions either 1:1 or groups
