Job Description

We have a great opportunity in our Newcastle office to work with experts in the complex injury area. This role offers the chance to gain experience assisting with claims to do with multi-million pound brain injury, spinal injury, amputation and fatal claims. Do you have some relevant prior work experience, do you have prior litigation knowledge, do you really want this opportunity If yes, then please read on . . .Job Purpose You will be required to undertake a variety of file handling and non-file handling tasks to support a small team within our Complex Injury Claims Team. Your work will be supervised and feedback given as you develop your skills in this area.Key Accountabilities

  • Delivery of agreed performance targets and quality standards.
  • The Junior Cat Injury Assistant will be expected to record a minimum of 5 chargeable hours per day, increasing with experience in the role.
  • Fielding telephone calls and dealing with general queries that would be escalated from paralegals.
  • Instructing experts and drafting letters of instruction where delegated from more senior members of the team.
  • Liaising with parties involved in claims including the insured, insurer, witnesses etc.
  • Reviewing records and preparing a precis for more senior members of the team.
  • Review of photographic evidence and video footage to provide precis for fee earners.
  • Assimilating detailed information from multiple sources of evidence and identifying even minor discrepancies.
  • Arranging appointments for claimants to be seen by medical experts.
  • Arranging conferences with client and counsel and experts.
  • Preparing instructions to counsel.
  • Assisting with preparation for hearings.
  • Attending client meetings and note taking where client approval given.
  • Dealing with disclosure and compiling list of documents.
  • Conducting legal research.
  • Maintaining case managements systems with up to date management information for clients.
  • To ensure compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct 2011.
  • Working Hours 35 hours per weekMonday - Friday 9am - 5pm with 1 unpaid hour for lunch.Primary location for this role is Keoghs, Newcastle.Recruitment Criteria:
  • Minimum education standards of 5 GCSEs grades A-C or equivalent with established interest in law either through further education (e.g. LPC or ILEX) or experience within a legal environment
  • Experience of and understanding of the litigation process
  • Understanding of case law and litigation practice and process, and Court Practice Rules
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workloads
  • Driven to achieve to take development opportunities when they arise with a positive attitude
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to re-prioritise and delegate effectively when required
  • Confident with ability to take initiative to innovate and adapt to changing situations
  • Confidence to seek advice and guidance when dealing with new tasks
  • Excellent listening and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to compose professional written communications
  • Ability to follow instruction with attention to detail
  • Ability to recognise when sensitivity and tact are required
  • Effectively work within a team
  • Proficient IT skills (Word, Excel and Office)
  • Good standard of education - 5 GCSE’s grade C/5 or equivalent including maths and English
  • Preferred:
  • Established experience in law through further education or experience.
  • File handling experience within a law practice or Insurer.
  • Good understanding of the high way code and basic road traffic act principles.
  • Experience of Indemnity Principles and CCFAs
