Job Description

Our client, a borough council, requires an experienced Public Health Intelligence Officer to assist in the development and management of the direction of public health information to reflect local, regional and national priorities.Key Responsibilities

  • Use a range of datasets to support the development and production of major reports.
  • Responsible for undertaking surveys, statistical analyses, and dissemination of findings to communicate complex information.
  • Evaluation using statistical and epidemiological methods to effectively measure the outcome and benefit of individual public health initiatives.
  • Use a variety of statistical software packages, such as MS Excel formula or Stata, databases and spreadsheets, and have the technical capability to support data management and manipulation to complete statistical analysis where appropriate.
  • Design and manage systems to input, store and disseminate public health statistical and epidemiological information to integrate and link multiple data sets.
  • Handle complex analytical and statistical health information problems and issues requiring interpretation and use judgemental skills to derive alternative information sources and methods of analysis when appropriate.
  • Responsible for creating maps and infographics using relevant specialised software (e.g. MapINFO) in order to better visualise data to explain complex information.
  • Work with sensitive information to ensure that the analyses are completed carefully and correctly.
  • Contribute to the planning and formulation of organisational (local and regional) plans and strategies based on sound statistical and epidemiological information
  • Develop appropriate new innovative ways of collecting data and raising awareness of the need and importance of statistics and epidemiology to connect public health information to organisational practice.
  • Support performance monitoring arrangements to ensure that the the team is able to deliver on the performance targets for which it has responsibility.
  • Provide statistical and epidemiological advice to the organisation and other strategic partnerships; offer expert advice around which data and sources should be used and how the information should be interpreted.
  • Responsible for providing the development and training of other staff.
  • Disseminate statistics and information to all stakeholders via a number of different media, electronically or written reports and be able to present complex statistical information in a clear and engaging way to a variety of audiences which will include both those with and without an understanding of statistical techniques.
  • Guide and advise others as appropriate, in their decision making processes based on sound public health knowledge and evidence
  • Communicate, establish and maintain relationships with other members of the Public Health Team, a range of other groups or individuals seeking help, advice or information on epidemiology, statistics, statistical methods research, or survey or questionnaire design related to public health.
  • Identify and propose changes to working practices to improve the quality of information delivery that will affect other disciplines or parts of the service.
  • Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge and experience of statistical techniques and procedures required for Public Health, acquired through relevant qualification or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of current public health policy
  • Fluent in electronically accessing and using complex health related data
  • Extensive working knowledge of MS Office in particular Microsoft Excel and Word
  • An understanding of data security and confidentiality issues
  • Experience of undertaking data analysis
  • Report writing and presentation skills, including of data and analyses
  • Experience of working with multiple sets of data and information systems relevant to health and wellbeing
  • Experience of system development and query and report writing
  • Experience of use of Geographical Information Systems (e.g. MapInfo) for creating spatial analysis.
  • Knowledge in the use of statistical and epidemiological methodologies for interpreting and understanding data sets
  • Experience of analysing and interpreting health, healthcare or demographic data, local authority data or other relevant data sets
  • Conscientious and proven team worker with the ability to engage with people at all levels
  • Numerate with skills and experience of the analysis and interpretation of data
  • Experience project based working
  • Experience in the development of systems for the inputting, storing and dissemination of information
