Job Description

30 Hours per weekAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Macmillan Band 7 Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, to join our nursing team within our established Acute Oncology and Cancer of Unknown Primary Service. Working for South Tees NHS Trust you will cover both sites; the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. The post is a substantive part time position 30hrs per week, working Monday to Friday across both sites. The post holder will be given the opportunity to care for patients experiencing complications of their cancer diagnosis, treatment or new presentation for patients with a malignancy of unknown origin in an acute setting. It is a varied role, which will involve working front of house assessing unwell patients, supporting the SACT Ambulatory Care Bay based in the James Cook University Hospital and covering the AOS Service at the Friarage Hospital. The post will have the benefit of Macmillan training and support resources as well as individual training and competency development plans within the cancer directorate. The successful candidate will have the relevant qualifications in nursing and cancer care at MSc level, with a recognised chemotherapy qualification. If you are a dynamic individual with the ability to motivate and influence others, while keeping patient care at the absolute core of every decision and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a specialist team this could be the role for you.The acute oncology service reviews patients admitted to hospital who are on active anti-cancer therapy or admitted as an acute complication of their malignancy, the service provides prompt review and recommendations for treatments the patient may require as well as preventing unnecessary tests and investigations where possible. The service provides rapid assessment and treatment advice with the aim of improving patient/carer experience, reducing hospital admission and/or length of stay. The acute oncology service acts as a resource, leading and supporting medical and nursing staff working within the acute admission area’s outside of cancer services by providing evidenced based advice on the management of this group of patients. The post holder will provide expert nursing advice and support to patients and carers.The post holder will be an integral part of the team working within the acute settings at South Tees Trust. The role will offer the opportunity to develop competencies to enable the post holder to function within all of the dimensions of a Clinical Nurse Specialist and will as such provide leadership, education and contribute to the strategic direction of the Acute Oncology Service within the Trust. The post holder will be mentored and supported by the team and will carry a supervised caseload. Working in partnership with the team they will also make a contribution to the rolling programme of clinical audits.The Trust is a major cancer centre, which hosts numerous cancer multi-disciplinary teams and provides excellent radiotherapy and oncology services.The successful candidate will have advanced interpersonal and leadership skills, the ability to work with diverse professional groups and a high degree of professional autonomy. The candidate will be able to demonstrate a high level of nursing skills and expertise specific to the speciality of cancer. They will have a first degree with either a master qualification or be willing to work towards this.
