Job Description

Associate Director - Curriculum and Quality (Initial Teacher Education Department)Location: TeessideSalary: Market Leading as well as a leading benefits package that is designed to retain and attract the best talent in our region.Who is my client: Middlesbrough College is the largest further education provider in Teesside.It provides predominantly further education but also selected higher education provisions to over 13,000 students. Middlesbrough College also employs over 1,000 staff out of their £100m state of the art campus on the banks of the tees.Key Strategic Responsibilities:

  • To provide high quality academic leadership and management for all staff in the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Team.
  • To ensure that the ITE curriculum is up to date, relevant and meets the quality standards and expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
  • To lead on updating the curriculum content to ensure successful course revalidation with our university partner when required.
  • To be a proactive member of the Senior Leadership Team for Teaching (SLTT) and cross college Academic Board.
  • To ensure learners have access to high quality internal and external placements and that they teach a sufficiently broad range of classes and regularly observe experienced teachers.
  • To ensure that the work of trainees and their mentors is of a consistently high standard and that they meet regularly to discuss progress to date and set future targets.
  • To carry out regular quality assurance visits and checks on learners whilst in placements.
  • To ensure that all mentors are trained to the required standards and that they provide learners with excellent support, advice and guidance.
  • To lead in setting standards and monitoring progress against agreed criteria.
  • To Lead and contribute to the quality of the curriculum through pedagogy / research activity.
  • To lead and champion research, innovation and scholarly activity, to ensure all staff remain up to date with current pedagogical / theoretical advances.
  • To ensure all staff have the opportunity to regularly share best practice and findings from their professional updating activities.
  • To ensure high quality teaching, learning & assessment and the management of underperformance.
  • To deliver outstanding teaching, learning, assessment and support for learners.
  • To set, mark and moderate work as required.
  • To ensure that all Individual Learning Plans are high quality and that they enable learners to develop their skills, knowledge and behaviours and make excellent progress.
  • To manage and take part in the observation of teaching & learning within the department and standardise with observers across the College.
  • To lead on curriculum planning, timetabling, the appointment of staff and cover arrangements for absent staff.
  • To ensure the department is fully compliant with the Colleges Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • To effectively manage the departments budget.
  • To champion quality assurance in the department.
  • To achieve the departments Key Performance Measures (KPMs).
  • To ensure all learners are supported effectively to achieve their goals, providing appropriate Additional Learning Support where required.
  • To lead on recruitment, interviews for prospective learners and induction arrangements including pre-course counselling, initial assessments and skills gap analysis.
  • To ensure that the Colleges Appraisal process is applied to all staff and that underperformance is identified and managed.
  • To deputise for the Assistant Principal, as appropriate.
  • Team Contribution and Flexibility
  • To attend and contribute to all team, faculty and cross college meetings where applicable.
  • To work closely with colleagues in developing a clear and relevant curriculum intent in line with local priorities and national initiatives.
  • To partake in marketing and recruitment activities including open evenings, school tasters and visits, student profiling for publications, interviews, induction, awards evenings, results day and enrolment etc.
  • The post holder may be required to undertake such other duties as may be reasonable required and in addition to the main tasks identified above.
Requirements: Qualifications
  • Qualified teacher with substantial and successful teaching experience.
  • To hold a good honours degree at Masters level in Education.
  • Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) (or willing to work towards)
  • GCSEs at Grade C / Level 4 or above in English and Maths, or equivalent.
  • Management qualification - desirable.
  • Membership of a professional body - desirable
Experience
  • Successful teaching experience.
  • Successful experience of academic leadership in an educational setting.
  • Successful experience of ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes.
  • Proven track record of innovation.
  • Experience of financial management - desirable.
  • Experience of leading a team during Ofsted inspections - desirable
Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of current issues facing the FE and HE Sectors.
  • An in-depth knowledge of Initial Teacher Education provision and framework.
  • An understanding of the ITT Core Content Framework
  • An in-depth understanding of research/innovation and scholarly activity.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways.
  • Ability to lead and contribute to the development of teams to ensure effective and productive working relationships.
  • High level of IT competency.
  • Proven ability to manage with clarity and purpose.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other agencies, both internal and external.
  • Ability to plan workloads and projects and manage resources effectively.
  • Ability to risk assess and implement policy/strategy in relation to Equality and Diversity, Health and Safety and Quality Standards.
  • Knowledge of Office for Students regulations - desirable
