Job Description

Data ScientistAn exciting position for a Data Scientist has arisen for my client, a large global FMCG organisation based in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire, situated a few miles away from Melton Mowbray. As part of the data analytics team the data scientist will independently define and execute data science projects across the Petcare ecosystem. He/she will be the expert on advanced data science methodology for the entire team and be a key driver in defining the portfolio of data science projects in a setting that currently is immature and ambiguous.Pay rate: £21.08 - £36.70 per hourAssignment duration: 1 YearHours: 37.5 per weekContext and ScopeThe WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition is our Clents fundamental science centre that drives quality and innovation for our global brands in pet nutrition, pet health and pet care. We follow a scientific and data-driven approach based on experimental data generated at WALTHAM, and on big data from genetic testing, activity monitors and electronic health records. Mining these connected data sets with advance analytical methods allows us to generate new insights giving Mars Petcare a competitive advantage and helping us to make a better world for pets.The Data Scientist position is embedded in the data analytics team of WALTHAMs research organisation. The main task is to execute and deliver on data science projects. We expect the role holder to bring relevant expertise in data mining and data management, but also have the skills to define projects together with stakeholders across Mars Petcare and to communicate on progress and results. In addition, we expect the job holder to advocate for data-driven research, to be independent, to work at high level of quality, and to contribute to shaping the development of our data platform and the portfolio of data science projects. Example projects include finding phenotypic associations in high throughput sequencing data and mining electronic health records for biomarkers of disease. To do this effectively will require an understanding of the WALTHAM and Mars Petcare R&D plan and vision, and regular interaction with our stakeholders, as well as strong leadership.The nature of the job demands that the data scientist should be able to communicate technical information at an appropriate level to associates with a wide range of prior knowledge and ability. Therefore, excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role. The jobholder will undertake continual personal development of both a practical and theoretical nature and will attend appropriate courses/symposia/conferences to maintain awareness of current knowledge.Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and deliver on data science projects taking responsibility for data modelling and analysis, including deep learning and machine learning, and data management and reporting
  • Work with key stakeholders across the organisation to identify and define value-adding data science projects across the Mars Petcare organisation.
  • Advocate the purpose of data-driven research and work to high scientific standards
  • Have an up-to-date knowledge on data modelling/analysis and data management methods and tools
  • Education & Professional QualificationPhD or Masters degree with equivalent relevant experience in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related fieldKnowledge/Experience
  • Must have experience applying machine learning models (supervised, unsupervised and deep learning) within a business environment. It is advantageous to have machine learning experience working within a biosciences context
  • Understanding of general statistical principles relating to sampling, bias, inference and prediction
  • Expert knowledge of R or Python
  • Demonstrated use of application of deep learning libraries (Tensorflow, Keras, Pytorch) is highly advantageous. Use of big data ecosystems (e.g. Spark and DataBricks) is highly advantageous
  • Excellent technical planning and influencing skills, enabling the execution of a variety of projects
  • An ability to communicate complex data science verbally and through written materials, to a variety of audiences including expert and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated leadership for defining and managing projects in ambiguous settings and with diverse stakeholders
