Job Description

Excellent opportunity for a Computational Chemist to join a leading R&D service provider based in the East Midlands or Leicestershire!The ideal candidate would be an experienced Computational Chemist with strong entrepreneurial acumen and previous management experience.Our client have ambitious growth plans so this role will be a fantastic opportunity for those looking for a new challenge and develop their career further. The successful candidate will have the responsibility of growing a department and develop the computational chemistry function for the organisation.Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To contribute value to the organisation by building and developing the Computational Chemistry Department
  • To lead, manage and carry out structure based design, docking and ligand optimisation
  • To lead, manage and take on fragment based design projects
  • To lead, manage and undertake protein sequence analysis and homology modelling- including multiple sequence alignment and homology modelling experience across numerous protein classes, including GPCRs
  • To demonstrate use of computational tools and techniques including virtual screening, structure-activity relationships, and chemoinformatics
  • To travel to, or work temporarily at, other company facilities in the UK from time to time as required
  • To show ability and willingness to recruit as well as supervise colleagues in the Computational Chemistry Department, mentoring and supporting team members as required
  • To be efficient in virtual screening - using protein x-ray structures and a variety of a ligand based methods such as shape and fingerprint based technologies.
  • Take the lead on development of platform technologies within the company
  • Identify new business opportunities and write proposals
  • To take a proactive approach to one’s professional development
  • To attend to any other incidental and general duties as specified from time to time by his/her Line Managers
  • Utilize analytical skills, industry knowledge and experience to develop the Computational Chemistry Department
  • Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
  • Computational Chemistry or a similar discipline - PhD qualification
  • Several years’ experience with small molecule drug discovery projects
  • Experience of homology modelling and protein sequence analysis - experience of multiple sequence alignment and homology modelling experience across numerous protein classes, including GPCRs, would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Ligand based design - SAR analysis of project data sets and calculation of ADME/Tox relevant properties including core replacement work and focussed library design.
  • Fragment based design projects experience would also be an advantage.
  • Proven capabilities in structure based design - docking and ligand optimisation.
  • Solid experience with a variety of computational tools and techniques including virtual screening, structure-activity relationships, and chemoinformatics
  • A pharmaceutical company or CRO drug discovery background is preferred
  • Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
  • Excellent communications & team working skills
  • Capability to recruit and develop junior Computational Chemists.
  • Capability to conduct virtual screening - using a variety of a ligand based methods and protein x-ray structures such as shape and fingerprint based technologies.
  • Ability to lead the development of platform technologies within the company.
  • Ability to identify new business opportunities and write proposals
