Job Description

Your new roleNational Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Project Manager to join the Regional Investment Programme (RIP) within the Major Projects (MP) directorate across the south of England on a 12 month fixed term contract.RIP is one of four programmes within National Highways Major Projects Directorate. Major Projects is responsible for the delivery of nearly 70 projects with a total value more than £14 billion, and some of the most exciting and challenging projects in thecountry. National Highways goal is to change the industry: to make roads and their construction and maintenance safer; to be more responsive to the needs of our customers, particularly about biodiversity and carbon; and to exploit the digital agenda and drivethe productivity agenda to improve delivery.We exist be a focal point for the delivery of sensitive and complex projects; growing individual talent and our organisational capacity to be successful. We strive to be creative and exploit digital and technological opportunities whilst maintaining thehighest standards in Safety, Health, Wellbeing and Customer Service to deliver great projects.Within this role, you will be required to lead the planning and delivery of a group of projects or a single large, complex project, managing the performance of project teams, external contractors and consultants. You will ensure your project(s) adhere toeffective governance, quality assurance, health and safety, technical and specialist standards, and you will be responsible for successful delivery of agreed project outcomes.You will work within Regional Investment Programme North, specifically on the nationally significant A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Project in Cumbria, County Durham and North Yorkshire.You will be based in Darlington, Penrith, Leeds or Manchester and the role will involve travel across the North of England. Following successful delivery of this programme, you may transition onto other transformation programmes, or capital project delivery.What youll be leading on

  1. Working with senior leaders and the Project Committee to ensure a full understanding of the projects objectives, agree strategies to achieve them and to deliver within the approved budget and programme
  2. Designing and implementing project plans, high quality baseline management products, and timely and accurate reports to ensure that project objectives are delivered on safely, time and are appropriately resourced
  3. Supporting development of the projects Business Case, including working with Centres of Excellence and Subject Matter Advisors to ensure timely approval
  4. Management of project budget, schedule and risk. You will identify and evaluate emerging risks, issues, opportunities. dependencies and constraints associated with the project, escalating where appropriate and developing solutions to overcome or capturethem.
  5. Managing the performance of delivery partners and expert consultancy support, setting clear expectations for health and safety management, time and cost, and taking appropriate remedial action where necessary
  6. Managing, leading and motivating the team of Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers and workstream specialists to ensure effective performance is delivered; you will support the personal development of direct reports and early talent
To be successful youll need
  • Experience of managing large-scale and/or complex projects during their development and delivery
  • Proven ability to build and maintain successful relationships with key stakeholders, and evidence of your ability to influence positive outcomes
  • Experience of managing health and safety requirements in a complex project environment
  • Experience of working collaboratively to lead and develop a team of people across organisations
  • Experience in developing complex business cases and securing governance approvals
  • Strong commercial awareness, ideally with knowledge and experience of using NEC 3 and 4 contracts.
  • An APM Project Management qualification or NEC4 accreditation (desirable)
