Job Description

Your new roleAs an Intelligence Support Statistician / Analyst you will be responsible for supporting Analysts and Statisticians within the Performance Analysis Unit (PAU), as well as the wider Chief Analyst’s Division, helping to support evidence based decision making within Highways England.As part of the PAU you will be involved in the production of regular reports, detailing the performance of the Strategic Road Network. You will also participate in analytical projects that the PAU undertakes to support the various activities of the company, as well as provide administrative support to the Division.Within this role you will develop the knowledge, skills and competence to follow a professional career in Highways England, with the purpose of progressing into a more specialist role. This role can be based in either Manchester, Birmingham, or Exeter, with ad-hoc travel to other Highways England locations and key external stakeholder offices as required.What you will be leading on

  • Undertaking data gathering and analysis to identify patterns, trends and issues affecting the performance metrics, delivery and operation of the network.
  • Supporting the development of resources, such as training guides and data dictionaries, to enable high-quality analysis of key datasets.
  • Coordinating and responding to ad-hoc data and information requests (eg parliamentary questions, freedom of information requests, customer inquiries), within the agreed timescales.
  • Participating in analytical and statistical projects supporting business areas including customer satisfaction performance, safety performance, and traffic flow performance. This will include querying datasets; applying analytical and statistical methods to data; and designing effective data visualisations.
  • Providing administrative support, as appropriate, for projects across the wider Division.

  • Degree or relevant equivalent qualification in a numerical discipline or equivalent work experience in an analytical role
  • Knowledge of analytical and statistical computing tools, data query languages or mapping software eg SQL, R, Python, PowerBI, ArcMap or similar is desirable
  • Able to demonstrate a strong numerical competence and an understanding of statistical and analytical techniques
  • Able to interrogate large data sets
  • Experience or knowledge of the full life-cycle of analytical projects, from project planning to disseminating results
  • Experience of communicating analytical results effectively
  • Able to work to tight deadlines

We develop and report a number of the company’s performance metrics and play a key role in developing the Performance Specification, published within the Roads Investment Strategy.
