Job Description

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, situated in south Manchester, is the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind in Europe, and an international leader in cancer research and development. We are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible service engineer to join the team responsible for the maintenanceand repair of our proton radiotherapy and research assets. The successful candidate will act as lead engineer for our proton research team providing technical support for all aspects of the research activities.Main duties of the jobDuties will involve quality control measurements, fault finding, repairs and planned maintenance of complex proton radiotherapy and research equipment including peripherals. The engineering team cover three shifts one of which works through the night.You should have experience in electro-mechanical engineering maintenance of complex systems, such as semiconductor manufacturing, the Armed Forces, radar systems or similar equipment. The successful candidate will have knowledge of electronic / electrical engineeringto a minimum of HNC level, and have a good mechanical aptitude. You should have a strong teamwork ethic with excellent communication skills and be able to work on complex problems under time pressure. On completion of training, Duties and ResponsibilitiesGeneral

  • Work as part of multidisciplinary teams to support and develop the clinical radiotherapy service.
  • When trained, will lead service work in photon therapy for machine ownership scheme
  • Provide technical advice to clinical and other staff groups as required.
  • The Engineer will be required to work within the framework of the 9001Radiotherapy Quality System.
  • Carry out repair, calibration and safety testing of highly complex Radiotherapy equipment. Makes decisions to take safety critical equipment out of clinical use.
  • The running up and preparation of radiotherapy equipment for clinical use and the closing down of equipment on completion of use.
  • To carry out and record approved modifications to radiotherapy equipment.
  • To maintain proper records of all work carried out on the radiotherapy equipment
  • Performs regular high precision machine quality control checks, measurements and associated adjustments to fractional mm accuracy.
  • Will have to work on radiotherapy equipment whilst patient is in the treatment room, or on the treatment couch.
  • To ensure that all radiotherapy equipment works to manufacturers specification.
  • To maintain specialist equipment technical records and reports for the organization.
  • Act as lead engineer for Proton Research Room providing technical support on all aspects of the University of Manchester activities
Technical support for radiotherapy peripherals
  • To provide specialist technical support to X-ray imaging systems, axis lasers and all peripherals used on radiotherapy/diagnostic equipment. This includes Brachytherapy systems
  • To assist with technical support to radiotherapy MRSim / CTsim as required
  • The maintenance of all test, measurement and service instruments and equipment including dose measurement instruments.
  • To participate in the development and construction of instrumentation and equipment to support the service.
  • Will work on R&V solutions and liaise with appropriate manufacturer to maintain clinical uptime
  • Will work on any equipment that supports treatment of patients within radiotherapy and diagnostic departments
  • Will participate in source changes for brachytherapy equipment if required
  • Will support work on all IT / estates / radiation treatment peripherals supporting PBT
Knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of: Control systems, Vacuum systems, Xray and imaging systems, Medical Device management / handling, Cooling systems, Mechanical systems, RF Systems
  • In depth knowledge of: Health and safety knowledge and Electronics and Electrical Systems
  • You have relevant technical experience in: PBT equipment
Special Requirements
  • Must be prepared to work towards registration as Clinical Technologist.
  • Work towards EngTech /IEng / CEng status with the engineering council
