Job Description

We also develop and establish robust and reliable commercial manufacturing processes that ensure we can supply life changing medicines to patients across the world.An exciting opportunity has now arisen within the New Modalities * and Parenteral Development (NMPD) organisation at the Macclesfield site for an experienced line manager to lead a multi-disciplinary pharmaceutics team to design, develop and commercialise the next wave of AstraZeneca parenteral products. You will be coach and lead a team of scientists and process engineers supporting all aspects of sterile product development and life cycle management including formulation, engineering, materials science and biopharmaceutics. As a member of the extended leadership team you will also contribute to the strategic growth of the team and the wider product development organisation.* Includes but not limited to oligonucleotides, peptides, modified RNA and advanced parenteral drug delivery systems such as nanomedicinesKey Accountabilities: In this role, you will:

  • Provide leadership and coaching to a multidisciplinary team consisting of 8-12 pharmacists, materials scientists, process engineers and biopharmaceutics scientists to ensure the effective design and development of parenteral products and processes.
  • Have technical responsibility and fiscal oversight for the product development aspects of a portfolio of parenteral projects spanning the entire product life cycle. Technical responsibility means driving the use of best practice in accordance with the standardised product development process. Fiscal oversight ensures internal and external resourcing is delivered in accordance with governance expectations.
  • Set clear and stretching goals for team members aligned to project deliverables and the strategic priorities of the organisation and ensure progress against agreed plans.
  • Work collaboratively with line managers to drive talent development. Use development discussions, coaching and mentoring to accelerate the development of individuals within your team and support opportunities for growth of key talent across the organisation.
  • Champion using lean tools, best practice and innovative approaches (for example advanced modelling and simulation, digital design) to improve development efficiency, facilitate problem solving and improve the sustainability of our developmental portfolio and commercial products.
  • Ensure all activities comply with AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical Quality System, and SHE standards.
  • Be a visible role model for the AstraZeneca Values and champion an inclusive culture ensuring individuals are supported to speak up and share their opinions and ideas to help contribute to the overall success of the organisation and create a great working environment.
  • All these activities will have a significant impact on the speed, quality and cost of our parenteral development portfolio, the sustainability of the existing portfolio of commercial parenteral products and the effectiveness of the NMPD and wider product development organisation.Essential Requirements:
  • BSc/PhD level education in a relevant subject area (such as Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering)
  • Significant relevant post graduate experience working within a Research & Development or manufacturing environment, within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams in the development and commercialisation of sterile products
  • A proven track record of using coaching, mentoring and other leadership tools to build high-performing teams and develop individual talent
  • A detailed understanding of the principles and management of SHE and cGMP.
  • A detailed understanding of the drug development process and the product life cycle and how Product Development contributes to it.
  • Extensive experience of the subject areas within Product Development and how they work together to deliver the best outcomes
  • Skilled in effective communication
  • Experience of working with external companies/partners to deliver business goals.
  • Working knowledge of other departments who contribute to the drug development process and the inter-relationships with product development
