We combine people’s technical knowledge and understanding with their talent and drive to design, develop and optimise synthetic routes that deliver the active pharmaceutical ingredients of our medicines in a sustainable, commercially viable way. We believe in innovation and continuous improvement, working closely with colleagues in academia and across industry, to ensure that we apply the newest technologies and principles in the processes we develop.We currently have an opening for an Associate Principal Scientist to lead Continuous Processing based in our Process Analytical and Continuous Technologies team.In this role you will be a scientific leader in our growing continuous community within Chemical Development. Together with your fellow team members and other colleagues across the department you will plan, drive and enable the utilisation of continuous processing to develop fast, efficient, flexible, cost effective and sustainable processes working with internal and external partners to deliver clinical and commercial API supply. On development projects you will work closely with chemical engineers, chemists, analysts, statisticians and modellers to design, develop, optimise and scale-up continuous processes. Within the team there will be an expectation to coach and mentor colleagues and support the implementation of continuous processing to ensure Chemical Development has access to the best manufacturing processing options. Key responsibilities:

  • Driving the delivery of continuous opportunities and manufactures across the AstraZeneca small molecule project portfolio
  • Developing, leading and implementing a strategy for Continuous Processing in collaboration with other technology leads ensuring alignment of technology strategies across Chemical Development
  • Providing Continuous Processing leadership and expertise in process development, process scale-up and manufacturability of drug substance
  • Acting as a scientific leader to initiate, drive and deliver science and technology improvement projects and other improvement activities within Chemical Development
  • Working collaboratively with groups within Chemical Development, Early Chemical Development/Pharmaceutical Science and Operations on the development of continuous manufacturing within AstraZeneca and with external contract manufacturing organisations (CMOs)
  • Championing and driving sustainability
  • Coaching and mentoring colleagues, empowering them to reach their full potential
  • Actively performing practical processing work on Chemical Development projects
  • Working with existing and new external organisations and companies to assess and develop new technologies and ways of working that will improve our capabilities
  • Developing and implementing, within budget constraints, equipment purchasing proposals for the development of continuous processing within AstraZeneca
  • Presenting Continuous processing work in patents, publications and lectures
  • Ensuring own work is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
  • Essential Requirements:
  • A degree and / or PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Significant experience working in the Pharmaceutical or Fine Chemicals Industry
  • Experience of leading technical projects and acting as a continuous processing expert on multiple projects
  • Experience of providing expert advice to colleagues on the application and delivery of continuous processing in the development and manufacture of chemical moieties
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across multiple skillsets
  • Ability to assess, review and report data from own work, with a clear understanding of its reliability. Interpret findings and draw authoritative conclusions and recommendations so that their significance can be appreciated
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Excellent team working and networking skills
  • A track record of continuously developing yourself and your colleagues via training and shared learning experiences to improve team efficiency and effectiveness
  • Desirable Requirements:
  • Experience of leading and driving improvement projects such as establishing new technology or ways of working
  • Experience of working with CMOs
  • A knowledge of continuous manufacturing control systems
  • A knowledge of kinetics or process modelling
  • Experience in technology transfer and commercial manufacture using continuous processing
  • Experience of working with external partners such as academia on investigating a new technology or processes and implementing these within the company
