Job Description

P+S Personnel are pleased to be working on behalf of our clients, who are currently seeking a Commercial Upholsterer to join their team based in Lowestoft, on a full-time permanent basis.Upholstery is currently outsourced by our client. To improve costs and lead times, and offer a wider range of options for customers, they are starting an in-house upholstery workshop. The successful applicant will be responsible for setting up this workshop and upholstering the company’s products.Key responsibilities:

  • Specifying, sourcing and installing necessary equipment for an upholstery workshop and the ongoing maintenance of equipment and work area to a high standard
  • Production planning/management to meet order deadlines
  • Batch production of upholstered office seating and panels using techniques described in Skills and Attributes’ section
  • Operation of machinery where necessary
  • Reporting on stock levels and production
  • Packaging and assembly
  • Quality control
  • To possess and understand Health and Safety Requirements - reporting any issues/dangers/concerns to management and assisting with Risk Assessments
    • Skills and Attributes:
  • Dexterity for grasping, manipulating, and assembling objects
  • Strength for manual handling/lifting of objects
  • Ability to match or detect differences between colours and textures, including shades of colour and brightness
  • Ability to make templates/patterns
  • Lay planning for optimum fabric usage
  • Accurate stitching within small tolerances, accurate cutting of foam and fabric to correct measurements, accurate nailing/stapling/gluing of foam and fabric
  • Ability to make soft furnishings like cushions
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong, or likely to go wrong and understand the correct channels to highlight and resolve
  • Ability to use Microsoft Windows OS and learn to use the company’s ERP software
  • An understanding of technical drawings
  • To have good communication skills
  • To be self-disciplined, and ability to work without constant supervision, to have excellent time management skills, finishing tasks within agreed time frames
  • To be a problem solver, able to use initiative to troubleshoot and overcome problems
  • To be organised, planning production to make best use of resources
    • Experience:
  • Proven experience in a commercial upholstery position is essential
  • Advanced upholstery techniques e.g. fitting zips, piping, fringing, buttons, Velcro
  • Making products with webbing or springs
  • Designing custom pieces e.g. booths or sofas
  • Ability to carry out other manufacturing processes e.g. woodworking
  • Operated advanced machinery e.g. drawstring upholstery system, CNC cutting machinery
  • Knowledge of computer software relating to upholstery e.g. using lay planning programs
