What its like to work here You’ll be reporting to the House and Gardens Manager, and working with the Collections and House Officer as a team of three at 575 Wandsworth Road. The hand-carved fretwork interior of this modest terraced house is enthralling and inspiring. 575 Wandsworth Road was acquired by the National Trust in 2010, because of the rich and striking interiors created by Khadambi Asalache (1935-2006), a Kenyan-bornpoet, novelist, philosopher of mathematics and British civil servant who, promoted by a damp patch in his basement, spent twenty years transforming his home into a work of art. With almost every surface adorned in hand-carved wooden decoration, it is one of the most fragile properties in the National Trust’s care with access limited to just 2000 people per year, and six people visiting at any one time.Location(s):A complete work of art, there is no onsite office and so when not delivering tours and other activities at the house, youll need to be comfortable travelling to and working from a number of locations including Battersea Arts Centre (where we deliver outreachworkshops), the Trusts London hub in central London as well as other partner locations. As a small team, a collaborative approach is essential. Youll have a very hands-on operational role, sharing duty management and supporting the delivery of guided tours and community programme, as well as on call duties on a rota (an additional allowanceis provided for this).Click here for more information about this location: 575 Wandsworth Road | London | National Trust What youll be doing As our Volunteering and Community Officer, youll be supporting the wider team by exploring and building links with the local community. You’ll help to make this a flexible, positive and inclusive place for partners, community groups and current and futurevolunteers to get involved. You’ll be working with several Trust teams at different sites on various projects, so your days will be full of variety. This may mean helping to run established community-led events, as well as coming up with new ideas for activities. You’ll develop new ways of working together, and deepen relationships with existing and new audiences. You’ll also help to hone the skills our teams need in order to welcome and work with all kinds of people.Despite the physical constraints at 575 Wandsworth Road, there is great potential for deep and meaningful engagement, and youll play a key role in opening up access to the local community in creative ways.
