About AgulhasAgulhas Applied Knowledge is a London-based consulting firm specialising in research, analysis, evaluation and learning on international development, climate change, humanitarian assistance and sustainability. Since 2003, we have provided strategic advice on aid programmes and development policy to the UK government, other DAC countries, multilateral organisations, developing country governments, philanthropic foundations and NGOs. We specialise in strategic reviews and evaluations: for the past four years, we have led the consortium that supports the Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) to assure the quality of the UKs international development co-operation. We also specialise in knowledge management, helping our clients to develop monitoring and evaluation systems, strengthen their organisational learning systems and improve the quality and value for money of their programming.The Agulhas practice is structured around two multidisciplinary hubs: the Crisis, Conflict and Global Challenges (CRUNCH) Hub and the Climate Hub. The CRUNCH Hub covers issues around conflict and fragility, including humanitarian policy, peace and justice, safe migration and human rights. The Climate Hub works across climate action, climate finance, just transition, building resilience and low carbon development.Across our practice, we provide services in the following areas:

We offer our staff the opportunity to work with leading thinkers in international development and apply their analytical skills to pressing global challenges.About the positionWe are seeking a full-time experienced Technical Expert with skills and experience in international development, sustainability and global challenges to join our team based in our London office. We are looking for candidates with strong technical skills that fall within our CRUNCH or Climate Hubs, with a strong understanding of the linkages between them. The primary place of work will be Agulhass London office, alongside the Regents Canal, in N1, but in view of COVID-19, staff are currently working from home until such time as conditions permit a safe return to the office. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds.Personal SpecificationTo succeed in this role, you will need advanced technical skills in social science research and M&E methodologies, and strong analytical, critical thinking and drafting skills. You will be a career professional in the international development or humanitarian sectors, and have a broad understanding of current international development, climate, humanitarian, conflict and sustainability debates and issues. You will have proven project management experience and a strong track record of delivering complex studies, evaluations and reviews to budget and within the designated timeframe, while meeting the highest quality standards. You will be well practiced in designing and conducting mixed-method research and managing field research to demanding quality and ethical standards.You will have a talent for providing thoughtful, innovative analysis, will be able to articulate your ideas clearly and succinctly, and can represent Agulhas effectively to a range of external stakeholders. You will be an excellent communicator, both in writing and verbally.You will be a strategic thinker with the capacity both to delegate and to step in to support other team members, demonstrating an inclusive and respectful approach to working in teams and with individuals who may have a range of different experiences and competencies.DETAILED REQUIREMENTSTechnical specialisms:
  • An ability to critically assess evidential sources, to reach, argue and defend evidence-based conclusions
  • Thematic expertise falling within either or both the CRUNCH Hub (such as conflict and fragility; humanitarian policy; peace, justice and human rights; migration; corruption and organised crime; CVE; risk management) or the Climate Hub (such as climate action, climate finance; just transition; building resilience; low carbon development)
  • An understanding of political economy analysis and institutional development
  • A broad understanding of the international architecture for development and humanitarian assistance, current thinking on good aid practice, and fluency with key concepts and debates in the international development and humanitarian field
  • Strong social science research skills, including an ability to synthesise literature, conduct effective interviews and design qualitative research, together with an understanding of ethical research practices
  • Quantatitive research skills and an ability to design and interpret statistics and quantitative data (advanced quantitative skills are an advantage).
  • Additional experience:
  • An advanced degree in a relevant discipline
  • 6-10 years work experience in international development, ideally with a period of time living and working in developing countries
  • Broad experience with project management techniques and processes, proficiency in creating budgets, timelines and monitoring arrangements, and proven ability to deliver projects to budget and timeframe
  • Demonstrable ability to produce high-quality, client-ready written work
  • Excellent commercial acumen
  • An ability to adopt innovative approaches and a flexible, adaptive mind-set
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proactive team management style, including working effectively within teams and supporting other team members
  • An ability to interact with clients professionally and competently, on both substantive and project management issues
  • Experience with business development, including identifying new opportunities and supporting the preparation of high-quality technical and commercial proposals
