Specialty Doctor in Paediatric Allergy - 2PAs - **Fixed Term contract for 18 months**The Department of Paediatrics at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an Specialty Doctor in Paediatric Allergy to join the dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team. The service is currently provided by three consultants Dr Rosy Wells (8PAs Allergy), Dr Anne Christopher (7PA split between allergy and asthma service) and Dr Sophie Vaughan (general paediatrician with an interest in allergy). The Paediatric Allergy Service is a multi-disciplinary team including two Allergy Nurse Specialists and a specialist Paediatric Allergy Dietician. There is no on call commitment. The demand for allergy service in the UK and in South London continues to outweigh currently available service provision. In seeking to become a designated paediatric allergy centre we hope to develop collaboration with other specialist paediatric allergy centres within South London including the services at the Evelina Children’s hospital at St Thomas’s and at Kings College Hospital.Outpatient clinics take place in the dedicated Paediatric Outpatient Unit, the Dragon Centre. Around 1100 new paediatric allergy patients are seen each year. The new to follow-up ratio is approximately 1.8:1. Approximately 360 food/drug challenges are performed each year in our Paediatric Day Case Unit, Jungle Ward.Clinical referrals are from GPs, other secondary care providers within South London and via the Emergency Department (ED) following an ED attendance. Ward Allergy referrals are seen on request. Clinical pathways are in place, and updated regularly, for patients attending ED.St. George’s Hospital is a large multi-specialty facility based in South West London, offering a wide range of adult, paediatric and neonatal services. It is co-located with a medical school - St. George’s, University of London. Children managed at SGH are either local, or regional tertiary patients. There has been a steady increase in the number of paediatric attendees in the Emergency department, in inpatient emergency admissions and outpatient referrals for local children. This reflects the increasing young population in SW Thames. Tertiary children’s services at SGH include endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neurology, oncology, allergy, paediatric surgery, PICU, trauma and respiratory medicine. The hospital is the second Trust in London with a helipad. The department has its own outpatient’s department, the Dragon Centre, a child development centre and 5 wards with 68 inpatient beds, a 10 bed PICU/HDU and 36 cot NICU.The demand for allergy services in the UK and in South London continues to grow. This post will help the Paediatric Department to meet this demand, expanding the service and thereby seeking accreditation as a specialist allergy service. The Paediatric Department at St. George’s Hospital is committed to improving the provision of high quality care to local children with allergy related problems, and acknowledges the significant unmet need for this specialty, as identified in several previous documents: Allergy, The Unmet Need, published by the Royal College of Physicians, 2003, and the Department of Health government review, published in 2006.For further details / informal visits contact:For further information, please contact Rachael Bolland, care Group Lead for Specialist Paediatric Medicine on orRachael.Bolland@stgeorges.nhs.uk
