Assistant Lawyer - Property Risks & Coverage - Reinsurance Keoghs LLP is one of the leading insurance law firms in the UK and can rightly claim to be amongst the most dynamic in its sector. We now have an exciting opportunity for a talented insurance lawyer to join the reinsurance group within our Property Risks and Coverage Team. This role will involve working with our reinsurance lead who is based in London. There is no requirement for the successful candidate to be based out of London but will be required to travel to London from time to time as the role may require.Our cases require a collaborative approach and you will be part of a team handling some of the most complex matters within the firm, including UK and international insurance and reinsurance coverage claims, binding authority disputes, drafting work and some regulatory advice. Most of the cases are high value and/or technical in nature and the work spans a wide range of (re)insurance business. The successful candidate will, in the course of their development in this role, progress to the handling of their own personal caseload but always with the support of our most senior lawyers. An interest in, and appetite for, technical legal work is essential.The team regularly delivers training seminars and workshops to clients and provides training to the Lloyd’s market via the Lloyd’s Market Association as part of its fee earning work. The successful candidate will have an interest in client development and be willing to assist in the preparation and delivery of seminars on technical legal issues. In the first instance the role will involve working closely with Andrew Schütte to assist in the running of substantial (re)insurance disputes and non-contentious instructions spanning a range of legal issues. It may also involve working with other lawyers in the firm from time to time.Key AccountabilitiesThe key accountabilities will depend on the level at which the successful candidate starts in role but typically these will include:• Reviewing documents and preparing draft advices to client on behalf of Lead Lawyer • Bespoke draft advices for Lead lawyer • Assisting the Lead lawyer with all aspects of the litigation process - in the Commercial Court, in London arbitrations and as monitoring counsel for disputes around the world • Considering the issues of coverage, liability, quantum and strategy• Conducting investigations• Proofing witnesses • Preparing first draft instructions to counsel and experts• Legal research• Document searches• Attendances at client meetings/strategy discussions/conferences for the purpose of note taking and follow up.• Liaising with subscription market and/or reinsurers• Assisting with legal drafting, including drafting insurance and reinsurance contracts and commercial agreements between insurers, service providers, coverholders, TPAs etc • Reviewing the FCA Handbook and PRA Rulebook and providing draft advice on insurance regulation • Ensuring compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct 2011In addition to the above, the candidate will at the discretion of the Lead Lawyer:• Handle a case load in their own right• Draft applications and court proceedings • Draft advices on offers which will require little amendment from the Lead Lawyer. • Engage in settlement negotiations/roundtable/ADRThe above is not a definitive list of possible work which may be delegated and which they may be required to undertake.Essential Skills & Attributes • Qualified solicitor • Previous private practice legal insurance or reinsurance coverage experience Desirable• Willingness to play a role in the development of client relationships and the practice as a whole • Interest in developing presentation and teaching skills • Experience of using Relativity electronic disclosure platform • Experience in legal drafting and/or insurance regulationWhat we Can Offer YouA learning culture with employee development at the heart of the people development pathway.
