Job Description

This post is being advertised by Agenda Life Sciences on behalf of University College London.Applications close on Thursday 23rd June.Biological Services is an integral part of UCLs biomedical research efforts, providing expert services to researchers primarily within the School of Life and Medical Sciences. The department is composed of around 80 staff based across a number of UCLssites in London. We work collaboratively with researchers to deliver an outstanding service and ensure that a high standard of animal welfare is maintained throughout.The post holder will be responsible for overseeing transgenic mouse breeding programmes and the maintenance of experimental animals. They will take responsibility for the everyday organisation of their workload and work closely with licensees to ensure goodhusbandry and animal welfare.Basic Requirements:

  • Home Office Personal Licence and experience performing procedures is essential
  • Thorough knowledge of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and EU Directive
  • IAT Membership, or equivalent experience
  • Fully conversant with transgenic technology including experience of transgenic breeding and maintenance and tracking of breeding colonies
  • Supervisory or management experience is desirable
  • Proven ability to train others to perform basic procedures
  • Good people management skills and the ability to help to organise work rotas and motivate colleagues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Organise and manage staff within the animal facility including allocation of duties, organisation of staff rotas, and enforcing facility protocols
  • Ensure that staff are trained to an appropriate standard of care including handling, breeding, sexing, and record keeping
  • Undertake licensed procedures and animal welfare and husbandry activities
  • Oversee transgenic mouse breeding programmes in discussion with project licence holder and Licensees
  • Work with the Deputy Manager to establish work schedules and assignments for technicians according to workload
  • Be familiar with the project licences in use, including severity conditions, adverse effects and humane endpoints
  • When necessary, cover the absence of management by verifying and authorising invoices for animals and consumables purchased.
  • Deliver lectures and practicals relating to staff and user competency training.
