Job Description

Blackrock Search are recruiting a Senior Data Scientist for ahybrid tech consulting company. This firm is focused on driving forward innovation in overlooked high barriers industries like rail and infrastructure. Their goal is to build a global technology and consultancy business that helps infrastructure and transport operators, train manufacturers, and asset owners utilise data more efficiently to improve operational performance that ultimately benefits passengers. They are increasingly becoming the top choice within the transport industry for breakthrough level innovation. In order to scale and make an impact they need a world-class team to help make a difference in critical but slow-moving industries. Are you the one who can forever change the transport and infrastructure industries foreverYou will be at the heart of a truly unique movement that will have a massive impact within the UK economy. We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to lead the analysis, modelling and visualisation of signalling and train performance data with the aim of reducing train delays and improving network capacity (more trains on the UK railway network). To do so, you will work closely with the UK railway operational performance teams to extract valuable insights from previously unused data.As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be responsible for developing algorithms that merge, aggregate and visualise complex signalling & train movement data, obtained from disparate sources. To achieve this, you must be comfortable with big data cleaning, wrangling and visualisation, exploratory data analysis, network graphing and best software engineering practices. You will be expected to lead by example, mentoring and guiding the team and external clients alike. You will most likely be an accomplished data scientist with track record experience of working with different types of data but looking to take on a new challenge in a different industry and on an impactful project.Responsibilities of the role:

  • Developing algorithms to reduce train delays and improving railway network capacity
  • Performing exploratory data analysis of train movement and signalling system data across the UK railway network. Designing experiments and interpret the results to draw detailed and actionable conclusions
  • Working closely with the railway operational performance teams to develop algorithms for extracting valuable insights from operational data
  • Working with our software engineers and data scientists on the team to rapidly build, test and deploy robust algorithms and data analytic solutions.
  • Skills and experience desired:
  • At least 3+ years research and development experience in industry or academia. Holding at least an MSc, and preferably a PhD in a scientific discipline such as Physics, Statistics, Computer Science or Mathematics
  • Substantial experience in data analysis, cleansing, wrangling, aggregation and visualisation with data science libraries such as pandas and numpy (3-5 years)
  • Substantial Experience working with data visualisation libraries such as matplotlib, seaborn, plotly, etc and understanding how to tell a story using data. (3-5 years)
  • Experience working with network graphing libraries such as networkx (1-2 years)
  • Experience optimising algorithms for speed and accuracy - plus working with libraries that make code run fast - i.e. numba
  • Experience working with large datasets and big data tools - i.e. Apache Spark/Scala - and/or task parallelisation libraries such as Dask
  • Understanding how to perform exploratory data analysis without losing focus or getting lost in detail / vast amounts of data
  • Good attention to detail; we want someone who enjoys making things great!
  • Prior work experience in an interdisciplinary team, preferably in both scientific research, prototyping and production environments.
  • Built and deployed data analytics and predictive solutions which are actively being used in an enterprise environment
  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Desirable
  • Experience working in the railway industry - knowledge of signalling systems and operational train movement data or UK railway open data feeds
  • Data Engineering experience on the cloud infrastructure - experience building data pipelines for processing live data feeds; familiarity with GCP.
  • Understanding of machine learning concepts and modelling principles
  • Experience leading data science projects / teams using software engineering best practices such as version control, OOP, unit testing, TDD, EDD, etc
  • Knowledge or working experience with R programming language
  • What do you get
  • The opportunity to fundamentally change and improve the transport industry.
  • The opportunity to engage with and work alongside our young innovators, key stakeholders in the transport and infrastructure industry.
  • Opportunity to be a leader within an established start-up with a strong brand.
  • If this is a role that would interest you then please send your CV ASAP to avoid disappointment.
