Clinical Fellow in Intensive Critical Care Medicine (AICU)Location - Brompton HospitalFixed Term - 6 Months (with possible further6 month extension by mutual agreement)Full Time 40 hours per weekStart Date - November 2020The post lies within the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, and the postholder will be professionally accountable to the Director of critical care.The Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) is a 20-bedded facility admitting approximately 1200 patients per year with a variety of cardiological and respiratory diseases. We are in the process of increasing to 36 beds. The multidisciplinary AICU team cares for patients utilising a wide range of organ support therapies, including extracorporeal cardiovascular and respiratory support. Routine post-operative cardiac care is undertaken in a dedicated cardiac recovery unit and as such the AICU case-mix includes; complex post -operative cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery, Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) and various mechanical assist devices. The AICU provides a severe acute respiratory failure referral service for the South-West of England and is commissioned as one of 5 national ECMO centres. Additionally, there is a developing mechanical circulatory support service. The postholder will have the opportunity to participate in the provision of these services including patient retrieval and repatriation.There is extensive use of echocardiography (TTE and TOE) along with FICE, FEEL & CUSIC training in critical care areas and potential for the postholder to gain experience in this area, if desired. Additional opportunities may be possible after discussion, such as – respiratory medicine, pulmonary hypertension, anaesthesia, transfer medicine, ACHD, ICU follow up, management & leadership.The AICU has at two consultants on service 7 days a week and additional consultant cover is provided for ECMO retrieval.
