Job Description

Description of projectResearch project T1194 CHAMOIS (Common HAzards for the Management Of Industry Safety) concerns the development of a common hazard list to be used by industry as part of their hazard identification processes. The common hazards should promote an efficient, consistent, and robust approach to hazard identification and hazard management and form part of the strategic activity required to meet strategic challenge B1 The project will also produce a vision for how common hazards integrate with the companies other product and services activities, e.g. how they can be used by the company to link requirements in standards to the hazards that they manage. The project is looking for an experienced safety engineer to support this work alongside the team.TasksThe safety engineer will be expected to work on the following tasks:

  1. Collation and review of existing hazard lists: Define the type of projects that need to be approached; identification of projects and request for hazard lists; review hazard lists in order to identify strengths, weaknesses and gaps
  2. Defining the methodology for developing the common hazard list: Defining what a common hazard looks like and criteria for testing "what is a common hazard"; Developing preliminary common hazard list and common hazard list structure.
  3. Developing the common hazard list: Development of common hazard lists; Evaluation of common hazard list.
  4. Project reporting and dissemination of results: Reporting to Steering Group and RMCG; Final report; Standard CHAMOIS briefing presentation; Dissemination of results.
Required skills
  • Good knowledge of railway systems, sub-systems, their interfaces and interaction (a broad knowledge is required but not necessarily a deep knowledge in any specific area).
  • Extensive practical experience of applying (or reviewing) hazard identification and safety assessment techniques e.g. HAZOP, FMECA, FTA, bowties. Knowledge of relevant legislation and standards e.g. CSMs and EN 50126/8/9.
  • An understanding of typical railway change projects, covering organisational and operational changes as well as technical and engineering changes.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to quickly understand and synthesise complex information and simplify it for a non-expert audience.
  • Good communication skills and ability to adapt the information dependent on the audience (e.g. managers, project leaders, health, safety and environment engineers and colleagues). Ability to write high quality reports, guidance and tools to inform stakeholder activity.
