The reporter is responsible for unearthing stories, developing contacts and delivering exclusive retail trade news that grabs attention from the shop counter to the boardroom. You will write for the nearly 33,000 independent local shops that make up the lion’s share of the £41.3bn convenience store sector. You will write across the most popular paid-for title in the market, RN, and the UK’s most widely circulated retail trade newspaper, Retail Express, as well as the online home of both print publications, betterRetailing.com. From investigating and exposing hot topics such as crime, sustainability and health, to analysing what magazines deserve space on retailer shelves, this is a varied role for a reporter prepared to challenge themselves and others on behalf of their readers. You will work collaboratively as a member of the editorial team and adhere to the company’s values. Reports to: Editor, Retail Express Key result areas: To be an expert news and convenience business reporter, demonstrated by: Becoming the go-to journalist covering newspapers and magazines in stores Building a well-rounded contacts book of retailers, suppliers, wholesalers, trade groups, publishers and industry experts Identifying, attending and reporting on industry events Taking responsibility for RN’s magazine sales advice and recommendations pages Working collaboratively with the wider editorial team. To produce news for RN, Retail Express and betterRetailing.com, demonstrated by: Regularly breaking news online on betterRetailing Understanding tone of voice and meeting audience needs for each publication Investigating, analysing and uncovering the stories that matter most to store owners Pitching exclusive lead stories for RN and Retail Express that cover all of our major beats and competing to make sure your articles win page and cover space Delivering accurate and on-time copy. To grow Our client’s brand by: Regular improvements to RN, Retail Express and betterRetailing,com in print and online that add value, displayed by positive reader feedback Driving debate and engagement with retailers and suppliers on social media Helping to achieve targets for RN, Retail Express and betterRetailing.com’s audience growth Representing Our client’s values in meetings, calls, emails and events. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following (others may be assigned): To generate exclusive news in print and online that stands out from the competition. To adhere to the writing, fact-checking and proofing processes for RN, Retail Express and betterRetailing.com. To deliver four stand-out newspaper and magazine industry news stories in each edition of RN. To oversee and manage supplier relationships for RN’s This Week in Magazines pages. To generate, research and pitch four wider industry news stories for each edition of RN. To generate, research and pitch one lead-worthy story for each edition of Retail Express. To develop specialist knowledge of, and contacts within, the newspaper and magazine industry. To upload regular digital content, adapting it for a digital audience and ensuring content is optimised for search engines. To promote this content through social media. To ensure our editorial values of accuracy, relevance and ease of use are met, and that all material published is within the law. To travel, attend and deliver editorial from industry events inside and outside of standard working hours. Person Specification Essential You have a track record of sourcing and writing exclusive, accurate and audience relevant news for print and online. You will understand how to source, collate and analyse data responsibly. You will have a firm grasp of media law and ethics. You will have good people skills and be a good collaborator, demonstrated by examples of building contacts, growing direct reports and working as a team. You have the ability to understand and represent the interests of readers, demonstrated by examples of quality, accurate writing, effective communication, relationship building and product improvement. You thrive under pressure and are highly organised, with great planning skills and a track record of hitting deadlines. You will have strong social media and digital skills, demonstrated by audience engagement and readership growth. Desirable Experience working as a reporter in a busy news room.
