Job Description

PwCs Economics team is looking to recruit an experienced public sector economist at Manager grade to join the firms expanding economics practice.Who we are and what we do As one of the UKs leading economics consultancies, and part of PwCs global networkof economists, we work alongside a wide range of clients, using economic insights to inform strategic choices, guide the development of policy and assess the impact of major investments. In the boardroom, in front of regulators and with policy makers, we developbig, distinctive ideas and important insights that are grounded in robust economic analysis.We take pride in both the breadth of our expertise and our diversity, with our Economics team comprising people from 12 different countries, speaking 22 languages.Whowe are looking for We are looking for candidates with significant professional experience (4-6 years minimum), most likely gained working as an economist in the Government Economic Service, but potentially gained working with an economics consultancy or internationalorganisation or in a research background. The successful candidates will need to have substantial practical experience of applying Green Book guidance on significant policy or investment projects. In particular, you will need to be able to demonstrate extensiveknowledge and experience of leading and delivering successful projects across the policy cycle.The ideal candidates will also be able to demonstrate an ability, with appropriate support, to source business opportunities and play a significant role in the expansionof PwCs public sector economics offerings.Whilst the successful candidates will work across a range of sectors, we would be especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following sectors: energy; transport; housing and other localpublic infrastructure. We envision the role to be based in our London office, but we are also open to discussions with regards to being based in one of our regional offices. We have also launched new flexible working arrangements for our staff which envisagesa flexible hybrid working model with time spread across our offices, client sites and home working.ResponsibilitiesProviding expert advice (and guiding a team to provide it) on a wide range of public sector economics projects.Working in multi-disciplinaryteams and clearly communicating an economics perspective on relevant topics.Managing junior staff on projects, between 2-6 staff at any one time.Coaching and mentoring junior staff and upskilling them to aid their progression.Authoring reports based on clientcommissions.Leading training related to areas of your expertiseReviewing broader team work in line with PwC standards to ensure quality delivery for clientsEssential RequirementsSignificant experience of delivering option appraisals, impact assessments anddevelopment of evidence-based business cases.Significant experience assessing the wider economic, environmental and/or social impacts of a policy and using those to inform robust cost benefit analysis combined with a good ability to apply these techniquesin a wide variety of contexts.Experience and knowledge of sector specific appraisal guidance (particularly in transport, housing or energy), ideally for several sectors.Experience delivering evaluations to measure policy impacts and learn lessons (demonstrablyaligning to Magenta Book guidance).Familiarity with the 2020 Green Book revisions and, ideally, experience applying them in a policy context.Experience delivering training to economists and/or non-economists.Significant experience managing your own workload,and the work of others, to tight timelines, and with conflicting priorities.Experience providing complex, economic analysis to non-economists in a clear, accessible manner, including the ability to draw out and simplify key insights from data.Experience workingin multi-disciplinary teams and building strong trust-based relationships with a diverse range of colleagues and stakeholders.Experience of one or more of the following systems is preferable; Stata, R, MatlabFluency in spoken and written English is a key requirement,and knowledge of another language is preferable.
