Job Description

Principal Policy Officer - Transport and EnvironmentStarting salary £ 36,042Contract until March 2024Want to play your part in shaping climate change policy in LondonWe are looking for a highly motivated person with enthusiasm, innovative ideas and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic, quickly changing policy environment.You will be based in the Transport and Environment policy team, working specifically on climate change policy and programmes. It is desirable for you to have experience of contributing to climate change policy development, which may include work on retrofitting, low carbon planning and development, low carbon transport, renewable energy and energy infrastructure, consumption-based emissions, the green economy and green finance, and climate adaptation.You will work to the Head of Climate Change to coordinate and support policy and programmes in these areas, rooted in delivery of London Councils Joint Statement on Climate Change. Your responsibilities will include working with London boroughs, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and partners in the wider local government sector to facilitate the sharing of relevant information and best practice, analysing data to inform policy development and strategic planning, supporting borough delivery of London Councils seven climate change programmes, and lobbying for policy that can support boroughs climate ambitions. This is an exciting time to work in these areas, responding directly to London boroughs increased ambition in this area, in the context of national policy development and the UKs hosting of UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow in November. It will present opportunities for you to shape London-wide approaches and leave your mark on the London transport and environment landscape.This role will require you to build effective relationships across sectors and communicate, negotiate with and influence a diverse range of stakeholders. You will also represent London Councils in a variety of internal and external forums. It will be important for you to have experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships, creative problem solving and managing a varied workload in a pressurised environment.You will work in a dynamic and forward thinking team responsible for transport and environment policy issues. The team lead on responding to the impact of spending reductions, driving investment in Londons transport infrastructure, improving Londons air quality, addressing climate change, finding solutions to Londons energy needs and developing creative and collective approaches to a variety of issues.London Councils welcomes applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds.London Councils represents the 32 boroughs and the City of London.
