Job Description

Are you looking to join a welcoming, friendly and diverse team, working at the heart of Governments economic and fiscal objectives If this sounds like you, wed love to hear from you!The Corporate Tax (CT) team work on high-profile and politically important policy measures that are central to the governments economic and fiscal objectives, whether thats encouraging business investment, improving the UKs international competitiveness, protecting the UKs tax base or finding new ways of raising revenue.Our work can be dynamic and fast paced with short deadlines at times. The focus is on tax areas that are technical but equally prone to hit the newspaper headlines, meaning the work is relatable and very exciting. You will be given lots of support and on the job training to help you develop the skills needed.We are looking for two Policy advisers, to join our teams Financial Services Tax and International Branches.These roles are stretching and provide a great opportunity to work on high-profile issues that have a direct impact on the governments finances, on companies, and on the UKs attractiveness as a place to do business. Both post holders will initially have the responsibilities listed below - though these may change over time to reflect ministerial priorities, and the needs of the wider CT team. The posts will not have any formal line management responsibility but there will be opportunities to develop skills in mentoring colleagues and leading projects.The post holder of the Financial Services Tax role will lead work on funds taxation, including in the context of the governments ongoing review of the UK funds regime, and the taxation of asset managers and securitisation companies. This is a broad and exciting portfolio, which provides the opportunity to learn both about financial services and the corporate tax system.Responsibilities include: Advising ministers on issues relating to the taxation of investment funds and related entities, including following a consultation on the tax treatment of asset holding companies in alternative fund structures. Leading for the Treasury on day-to-day policy work on the taxation of asset managers and securitisation companies. Producing timely and well-written briefing and correspondence on a range of financial services tax issues for ministers, press office and fiscal events. Building positive relationships with HMRC, Treasury teams, other government departments and industry partners - ensuring that funds taxation issues are well understood by others, as appropriate.The International Tax role will involve work on a range of international CT issues including the ongoing OECD/G20 effort to reach an international agreement on digital tax reform, which is a key deliverable for the UKs 2021 G7 Presidency, and core tax policy measures that protect the UK tax base from erosion.Responsibilities include:Collaborating with Treasury and HMRC colleagues to develop and test innovative solutions to international tax policy problems, examining them from a range of perspectives (e.g. economic, legal, political). Advising ministers on how to use international tax policy to support their objectives. Consulting with business and other partners on policy proposals and preparing measures for announcement at the Budget. Producing timely and well-written briefing and correspondence on a range of international tax issues for ministers, press office and fiscal events. Supporting Ministers and senior Treasury officials in preparation for meetings with international counterparts and domestic external partners.Previous experience of working on tax or tax policy is not required.
