Job Description

About the team:The national patient safety team is legally responsible for delivering statutory patient safety duties across the NHS. These are;

  • collecting information about what goes wrong in the health service, in part by maintaining and operating the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) and Patient Safety Incident Management System (PSIMs); and
  • using that information to provide advice and guidance “for the purposes of maintaining and improving the safety of the services provided by the health service”
    • These duties require the remit of the patient safety team to encompass the whole healthcare system; primary, urgent and emergency, secondary, tertiary, health in justice, commissioning and independent care provision, as well as the interaction with the nursing/care home sector.The existence of and activity undertaken to meet these statutory functions mean that the national patient safety team is a centre of expertise in relation to patient safety – from a clinical, policy, leadership and improvement perspective.About the role:The postholder will work across patient safety to develop and maintain routine and new data analysis and measurement for improvement at a national level and provide specialist oversight and support to colleagues and stakeholders. In particular the postholder will:
  • Define and maintain current analytic processes
  • Horizon scan and facilitate discussions and advise colleagues on how best practice might be adopted in the definition of future processes, and oversee their delivery
  • Be responsible for subject matter expertise in the development of PSIMS and in supporting the analytic transition from existing platforms to PSIMS
  • Be the responsible statistician for all official statistics and other public facing outputs.
