Middle School/High School Choral TeacherReporting to: the High School Principal Hours: full-timeStart Date: 1 February 2022Contract: February 2022 - December 2022Salary: £42,652 - £92,404 depending on qualifications and experienceOverall purposeThe MiddleSchool/High School Choral Teacher is responsible for directing and co-directing the middle school choruses and the high school concert choir, teaching students in Grades 5-12. The post holder will work as part of a two-person choir director team and in closecollaboration with the wider music and performing arts department. The ASL performing arts department utilizes the American ensemble approach of music education, in which students develop their musical understanding through performance in a large ensemble,therefore, the post holder should be familiar with large-group instruction and possess outstanding conducting skills.The School aims to provide an outstanding American education in an international setting. Students at ASL study a curriculum that employs NorthAmerican educational philosophy and teaching methods.Summary of major responsibilities: Direct and co-direct the middle and high school choirs, coordinating and promoting performances at various school-related events and concerts Prepare courses and plan curriculumwith other members of the department, and liaise with other departments, as appropriate Exhibit knowledge of current trends, pedagogy, research and topics of importance in the teaching of music by applying it in the classroom and sharing it with teachers ona departmental and school-wide basis Monitor and evaluate students progress, and prepare for parent conferences, grade assessments, and complete report cards, etc. Serve as musical director for the middle and high school musical theater productions, alternatingwith the other choir director Prepare students for middle and high school musical productions, honor choir festivals, and the annual high school Music Tour, and traveling to those events taking place off campus Assume responsibility for the safety and well-beingof all students, while delivering an engaging and challenging curriculum Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities Any other duties as are within the scope,spirit and purpose of the job, as requested by the director of teaching and learning or MS/HS principalsEssential qualifications/experience: A bachelors degree in music or related educational field Substantive and demonstrable music teaching experience ina school setting, including extensive experience directing student choirs Excellent knowledge of vocal pedagogy and technique Experience with teaching extraordinarily large ensemble classes with a wide range of abilities Knowledge of the US educational philosophy,and the National Core Arts Standards Significant recent professional development and knowledge of best practice in music education Excellent computer skills and integration of technology into the curriculum Strong oral and written communication skills Outstandingcollaborative skills and a desire to work in a team-focused environment Willingness and enthusiasm to participate in wider school life (musical theater, coaching, club sponsorship, etc.) Demonstrable commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare ofchildren and young peopleDesirable qualifications An advanced degree in music or related educational field Proficient piano skills Experience in a school with a similar teaching philosophy to that of ASL, which employs comparable teaching methods and curricula,or to have received training that will adequately prepare the candidate for the American style of teaching required by the School Familiarity with music notation software and music technology applications Ability to lead smaller vocal ensembles specializingin chamber music, vocal jazz, and other music styles from around the world Ability to teach other musical electives such as music technology or music theoryThis position description is current at the date shown but following consultation may be changed toreflect or anticipate changes in the role that are commensurate with the job title and salary.The American School in London is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all trustees, employees and volunteersto share this commitment.
