About the job Private Care at Guy’s is London Bride’s state-of-the-art cancer centre. Located on the top four of floors Guy’s Hospital’s NHS cancer centre, Private Care at Guy’s is wholly owned by London Bridge Hospital and features theatres, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, oncology and surgical wards, and a four-bed intensive care unit with an intensive care consultant resident 24 hours a day, we deliver a level of care rarely found in the private sector.Private Care at Guy’s provides an environment in which the UK’s leading consultants can deliver the best possible care and treatment for our patients. London Bridge Hospital’s urology, haematology, head and neck, gynaecology, and oncology services are based here. Private Care at Guy’s is also a centre of excellence for robotic surgery, oncology and a JACIE accredited stem cell transplantation unit for blood cancers and Multiple SclerosisJob Description As the Haematology and Oncology Matron, you will work within your scope of professional practice to prioritise people, preserve safety and promote professionalism and trust in effectively managing a number of wards, departments of teams to provide excellent, safe, effective and compassionate care throughout the 24 hour period.You will be patient focused and provide nursing leadership and direction for all nursing staff across the services managed and act as a point of contact for advice and expertise on all matters relating to both professional nursing and specific specialty issues.Acting as a role model of clinical leadership who inspires, motivates and empowers nurses within the service to deliver their best, the post holder is responsible for effectively managing the financial resources, ensuring the optimal deployment of the nursing workforce to ensure high-quality patient care is delivered and monitored. This will require the post holder to contribute to both corporate and hospital initiatives and plans, particularly in respect of changes in patient care delivery and quality.In collaboration with the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) you will be involved in the planning and implementation of developments relating to nursing throughout the hospital.Duties & Responsibilities: Patient Care and Experience:

  • Accountable for the management and oversight of 24 hour care for all patients (and those close to them) within the services and facilities in each functional area, promoting excellence as standard.
  • Promotion of a nurturing environment for patients, relatives, visitors and staff through monitoring, measuring, actioning and evaluating service, advocating for patients at all times
  • Assess patient feedback for all departments making timely responses to all outcomes
  • Accountable for ensuring good standards of clinical documentation and communication throughout clinical areas
  • Maintain personal contact and be pro-active in seeking out the views of users, both consultants and patients, in order to address concerns and appreciate and acknowledge satisfaction in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Deputy CNO and CNO to implement and evaluate user involvement and feedback mechanisms.
  • Be research aware and promote, maintain an evidence based practice culture for nursing staff.
  • Leadership and Management.
  • Provide effective line management to Clinical Nurse Specialists and Ward Mangers within the services providing guidance, support and coaching and through them ensure that all nursing staff within the service are appropriately managed.
  • Be a visible, accessible and assertive figure to whom nursing staff, patients and the multidisciplinary team can turn to for assistance, advice and support. Act as a role model for nurses in the designated clinical area, promoting and demonstrating the standards of care and behaviour expected at all times, ensuring that the NMC ‘Code’ is adhered to and exhibiting high standards of professional behaviour and promoting an evidence based practice culture for nursing staff including wide dissemination of evidence
  • Create a culture based on staff involvement where staff are developed and trained to be knowledgeable about the specialties on their nursing floors, are able to take responsibility within their sphere of knowledge and feel valued and supported.
  • Work closely with the Duty Nurse Managers, other Matrons, Deputy CNO, CNO to ensure smooth day to day operation of departments and achievement of service targets, including daily bed management.
  • Participate in the formulation and monitoring of annual nursing workforce plans, ensuring integration with the business planning cycle, and the optimal deployment of the nursing workforce.
  • Support the development of nursing staff, ensuring appropriate succession planning agreements are in place and identifying opportunities and potential champions for modernizing service delivery.
  • Provide line management responsibility and leadership to Clinical Nurse Specialist and Ward Mangers, ensuring that appropriate standards of nursing care are set and monitored in accordance with local national requirements.
  • Strategy and Service improvement
  • Develop an annual workforce plan, aligned with the business planning cycle and assist Ward Mangers in reviewing and ensuring that staff establishments and skill mix are appropriate to meet clinical demands in each clinical area.
  • Responsible and accountable for ensuring clinical excellence and professional standards in own area are optimized, e.g. standards of record keeping, clean environment and minimizing the risk of HAIs.
  • Take lead responsibility for continuous review of support services, e.g. hotel services within areas of responsibility and be proactive, taking remedial action when services, which affect the patient’s experience, fall below standard.
  • Skills and experience
  • Nurse Registered is essential
  • Previous experience of managing teams of nurses and other health care professionals
  • Evidence of a high level of clinical competence within defined specialties (Oncology & Hematology)
  • Consolidated experience in a clinical leadership role at or equivalent to Ward Manager or Matron
  • Experience of managing resources within budget/ and capture of patient revenues/ meeting revenue targets
