Job Description

Group Senior PR & Communications OfficerWe are looking for an experienced, determined and collaborative communications professional to join our team as a Senior PR & Communications Officer, during an exciting time of growth for our social enterprise whose mission is to deliver a world that works for everyone.This role is to raise the profile of and build the reputation of TBIG’s work through high quality proactive and reactive PR, as part of an integrated communications strategy under the direction of the Head of Communications.This role is to raise the profile of and build the reputation of TBIG’s work through high quality proactive and reactive PR, as part of an integrated communications strategy under the direction of the Head of Communications.Group Senior PR & Communications Officer Responsibilities:

  • Leading media work to drive awareness of TBIG’s mission and activities, including: The magazine and its’ network of 1,700 vulnerable vendors. Our Ride Out Recession Alliance (RORA) campaign. Lord John Bird’s Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill. The work of our social investment arm, Big Issue Invest.
  • You will be responsible for devising and delivering strategies to secure target levels of media coverage and building and maintaining contacts with journalists across national, local and trade media with the aim of raising TBIG’s profile and promoting the different business units’ work.
  • You will also be expected to help with handling reactive enquires on the news desk and provide media support to our spokespersons.
  • You will ideally have some experience of briefing senior spokespeople and managing crisis and reputational risk.
  • Group Senior PR & Communications Officer Requirements:
  • Demonstrable experience working as a media officer, or a senior PR executive for 3-5 years..
  • Excellent knowledge of consumer, national and local media.
  • Experience working in strategic communications and the ability to work with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Relationships with key journalists in social affairs, investment and general media.
  • Knowledge of major media outlets and their requirements.
  • Knowledge of the poverty space and the current political landscape relating to homelessness, unemployment and environmental issues and UK Government policy; and previous experience working in a third or public sector are desirable, but not essential.
  • About The Big Issue:Since 1991, The Big Issue has fought poverty by creating opportunities and supporting people to take control of their lives. To complement the self-help ethos of The Big Issue Magazine, The Big Issue Foundation was established in 1995 to link vendors with the vital support and services which help them address the issues that led to and have arisen as a result of their experiences.Location: This role will be based in our head office in Finsbury Park in London, however due to current Covid-19 restrictions it is likely that the successful candidate will work at least part of the time from their home address. We are also supportive of flexible working beyond that.Salary: Salary commensurate with the third sector, which can be confirmed on request.Type: Full Time, Contract - 9 monthsBenefits to include:
