Job Description

G3 Research and Development Manager - London - £44,371 + £3,339 London weightingThe National Crime Agency (NCA) leads the UK’s fight to cut serious and organised crime, and the Threat Leadership Command, which comprises of a number of specific functions including the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU), Child Exploitation Online Protection team (CEOP), Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT) and the Threat Management Team, is responsible for the national response to Serious and Organised Crime threats. Their role is to work with partners inside the NCA and externally the set the strategic direction and facilitate effective delivery of the response. One of their key objectives is to tackle Serious and Organised Crimes threats by maximising the benefit of new capability across the system, and this has attributed to the growth of the organisation, leading to a number of exciting opportunities in the organisation including the Research and Development Manager within the NCCU.The National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) leads the UK’s fight against cybercrime and uses specialist capabilities and expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and coordinate the entire UK response to cybercrime. The Research and Development team utilise technology to aid investigations by exploiting new legislation to cause real world impact against cyber criminals. These roles are core to the delivery of NCCU and wider NCA operations.As a consequence, the Research and Development Manager will lead a multidiscipline team responsible for researching, developing and implementing innovative tools, techniques and tactics for use in investigations into cyber-dependent and cyber-enabled crime. Additional duties include;

  • Developing and deploying new techniques and tactics in support of operations. Lead on approaches to complex operational problems requiring technology to overcome.
  • Overseeing the use and development of specialist capabilities, offering expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and internationally.
  • Providing tactical support to Operations investigating high end serious organised crime, support online operations.
  • Using knowledge of cyber-crime and knowledge of UK legislation IPA and CPIA.
  • Delivering strategic and tactical digital solutions to operational challenges and emerging technological threats focused on serious and organized crime affecting UK
  • To succeed, you must have a sound knowledge of cyber-crime and knowledge of UK legislation IPA and CPIA. In addition, you must have experience of interpreting customer requirements/threat landscape to develop technical solutions, have a background in either digital forensics, penetration testing, reverse engineering, or malware analysis and experience leading a small team of technical staff in a time critical fashion.Please note that to be considered, you will have to undergo SC Enhanced clearance, and also undertake and pass a substance misuse test as part of the pre-employment checks. SC Clearance checks also dictate that you must have been a UK resident for three out of the last five years. Within this role, you may well be exposed to images of Child Sexual Exploitation, so please consider and be aware of the sensitive nature of the work before deciding to apply.
