Job Description

We are currently working with a public sector client, looking for a Financial Accountant to join the team on a 6 month temporary basis.This is a remote, home working role providing cover to the Financial Accounting team. As such we are ideally looking for a candidate with recent experience within an account function within the public sector.This role works within a Financial Accounting team, with a purpose of providing expert and accurate information analysis, technical support, and insight in support of the local customers.Responsibilities will include:

  • To follow the concepts and principles contained within national accounting standards and policies in the production of the year-end financial statements.
  • To provide overall management of the completion of the Balances exercise on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Daily monitoring of bank balances, checking, authorisation and processing of payment runs and preparation of regular cash flow forecasts to assist the client in managing their cash budgets, including providing advice to work within monthly budget.
  • Provide advice on VAT and tax, including communication as required to both financial and non-financial managers. Ensure accounting for VAT transactions is carried out correctly and that claims are made in an accurate and timely manner including completion of monthly VAT returns.
  • Assist the Financial Control Manager in the production of customer planning documents, specifically cash forecasting and SOFP planning.
  • Ensure that accounting records are maintained to high standards to enable the requirements of governance, internal and external audit requirements and completion of monthly reconciliations.
  • Responsible for completion and sign off of monthly reconciliations and control accounts with accuracy and to timeframe.
  • Development and interpretation of complex Excel spreadsheets and training of other team members in their use.
  • To interpret financial accounting and governance policies, procedures and practices, working with colleagues within the function to establish a consistent and effective approach when creating the Financial Accounts working papers.
  • Ensure that reports are accurate, timely and submitted according to financial timescales and legal/procedural requirements.
  • Provide financial and information support advice and guidance to directors and budget holders. This will often include analysis of highly complex and sensitive data sets and material.
  • Maintain and file all records required to ensure that the client is able to satisfy the requirements of Service Auditor Reporting (SAR) without any exceptions occurring.
  • Line management of staff within the team.
