Job Description

The post holder, based in the Air Quality and Public Health (APQH) Group, will work with the team to support the objectives of UKHSA’s Cleaner Air Programme to develop and share the evidence base on air quality, improve how information on the health impactsof air pollution are communicated; and encourage and support behaviour change at every level.The post holder will contribute to the development of evidence of expert advice on the mortality and morbidity effects associated with both indoor and outdoor air pollution and the health impacts of interventions aiming to improve air quality.LocationRole available at all core and scientific locationsChilton, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, London, Nottingham, Newcastle or home working subject to approval.Responsibilities section: The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Support the development of advice on the health effects and risk assessments of air pollutants and effectiveness of air quality interventions
  • Contribute to research and peer-reviewed publications on indoor and outdoor air quality as required and in collaboration with other UKHSA departments / directorates and external partners
  • Support UKHSA staff in EHE dispersed Units and Health Protection Units in their role by providing advice on air pollution on a site-specific basis.
  • Contribution to capacity building, communication and training, both internal and external for developing and disseminating the evidence base for reducing the health impacts of air pollution
  • Ensuring all data/ information generated within the air quality work programme is stored in an appropriate manner ideally in an electronic form consistent with UKHSA’s information management policies

  • Relevant Bachelors or Masters qualification or equivalent level of experience environmental epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental science or similar, or equivalent experience
  • Awareness of the health effects and regulation of air pollutants
  • Understanding of project management
  • Clear communicator with excellent writing, report writing and presentation skills; capable of constructing and delivering clear ideas and concepts concisely and accurately for diverse audiences
  • Ability to critically assess literature, data and other information relevant to assessing the health effects of air pollutants
  • Skills for project and database management
  • An understandingof and commitmenttoequalityofopportunityandgood workingrelationships
Desirable
  • Further training to PhD level
  • Experience of working in air pollution
  • Use of statistical analysis
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information, pre-empt and evaluate issues, and recommend an appropriate course of action to address the issues
  • Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
